date casting code on this 454 motor reads A28-71. My guess is Jan. 28 71 but everthing I have read only has one number for the year. What am I missing. thanks for any help. gary
Usually a 2 digit year format means its not a Corvette engine.
Is this true of later big blocks? This article says a two digit year indicates the block came from the Tonawanda plant. I'm pretty sure the 454's were built there. Was it Flint that was one digit, small block?
not for Tonawanda cast engines. only Flint used the single digit date format. and all BB came from Tonawanda
That would make sense. The front pad # is T 0215 cpj . The other block casting # is 3963512. If I have all of this right it should be a 1971-454 with 365 or 425 hp. I will have to see if it`s two or four bolt mains. Is this all correct for the # I have posted? Thanks for the input. Gary
So this statement is wrong, just want people to not confuse things here, this is how misinformation gets started
No, it's correct- if the subject is small block engines. Flint supplied 99.9% the small block engine cases for Corvette. One simple way of telling the difference between a Tonawanda small block and Flint small block is a single digit or double digit for the year in a casting date. Then there's McKinnon Industry cases but that's another kettle of fish.
