Went to start the car (69 350/300 4 speed) a few days ago and the starter twice sounded like an impact wrench before engaging the flywheel and turning over the engine. I'm thinking starter on its way out....bad solenoid...chipped teeth on flywheel...or none of the above...? What do you folks think? Also did some preliminary checking just in case it is the starter and can't seem to find a replacement.
As always, thanks to everyone for their time.
Get that thing off there and do a good inspection of the starter and the block where the starter mounts.
Over the last several years I'm running into block and starter mount issues. Not sure if people aren't taking the time to properly mount the starters or its the reman starter noses that are causing the problems or both.
Broken blocks, stripped threads,no forward mount and on and on.
I think shimming is also to blame for some of the cracked blocks.
Bendix drive going bad on the starter shaft. It is replaceable. You should swap out the solenoid and put new brushes in the starter, if it has a lot of years of service.
Thanks for the advice. Given your suggestions, do you think replacing the starter itself would be a good idea? I have not found the one for my engine but what I have found (350 automatics, 327s, 454s) all seem to be around $100. I'm thinking once I locate the one I need it will be around the same give or take a few bucks.
edit-or this one ? Make sure you get the high torque one, with 2 term coming out of starter and connecting to the solenoid. I think the first link is high torque but you need to hand pick nowadays. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...6917_192289_0_

Unless the bearings/bushings in your starter have gone bad (very unusual), there is little reason to replace a starter. The Bendix drive, brushes and the solenoid are all easily replaceable. Why buy someone else's used starter when you have a perfectly good one yourself?

I agree with what you've said re: a remanufactured unit. Auto Zone does offer a new one for a few dollars more. Just may do what you suggest though and rebuild what I have. Another way of keeping the orginality. My thanks to you both.
