If I remember my Army training (infantry), the solution to all incomprehensible problems was "blow it in place with C4".

By hand at first. Then an open end wrench to snug it down.
As far as gaskets, I prefer rubber. The cork gaskets do dry out and start to crack over time. When I did mine, I used permatex to hold them in place on the valve covers. The valve cover bolts are just past finger tight by about 1/2 turn. They haven't leaked in two & half years.

I can beat that...my recently acquired 77 has chrome valve covers...with no oil fill! I guess you fill it thru the dipstick tube with a funnel!
