Well, here is my 1st un-bubba on the 71. I noticed the oil was a little low, so I went to add a little. Hmm, the oil cap hits the compressor and wont come off. Gee that's probably because the covers are on the wrong side right? Geez.
So any special tips before I swap them to the correct sides? Should I replace the gaskets while I am at it?
So I see a bunch of different materials and thickness for the gaskets. What is the best? Cork/Rubber? If Cork, there are several thicknesses to choose from.
I have been taking my valve covers off and cleaning them once a year, for 27+ years and have never replaced the gaskets. They are cork and stuck to the covers. Just put them in the sink scrub the covers and put them back on. Never leaked. Have a set in the garage in case I tear one, but never have. But you can't go wrong with new ones. Good luck with your swap.

Same here, they are glued with Permatex to the valve covers and then I just run a drop of oil around the mating surface with my finger and snug them down - no leaks.

Ditch that rubber hose from the fuel filter to the carb inlet pipe! Any rubber fuel hose on the pressure side of the fuel pump is a fire hazard and should be replaced with hard line, and not copper.

Another Excellent idea! Keep em coming, I am making a small 87 page list
I like the composition cork/rubber Fel-Pro valve cover gaskets. They don't dry out like 100% cork...and they seal a lot better than 100% synthetic rubber./

I don't use fuel hose anywhere. It dry rots too fast. I use fuel injection hose for everything. It's a much higher quality of hose. It's also a much higher price tag. The injection line will work just fine. If it scares you that much, buy -AN braided line.
