Had a 5.6 on Monday, followed by a 6.3 over an hour later here in Christchurch, New Zealand. And just like the Beverly Hillbillies intro, only 500 times more, a short time after the shaking, up from the ground comes a bubbling silt. So more shoveling before work can carry on. The up side, is no damage to the cars this time (lost a lower dash pad, plastic speedo housing and lens in February). Although I did find a headlight assembly in 6 inches of silt!
At least this time, nobody was killed or seriously injured. And not as much silt as February. Still, this crap has been going on since the 7.1 in September! Thanks for letting me vent!
Cheers

Wow that crap comes up every time the ground shakes? That has to be one serious PITA to keep cleaning up. How fast does the stuff come up? Slow seepage or right away?
Yikes! Based on personal experience and from friends who live in California, quakes don't produce silt, just huge gaping crevices - I guess this is a NZ byproduct? Looks like back-breaking work to clean that up!
Glad everyone is OK. The scary thing about the silt eruption is that the solid land is sinking by the same amount of the eruption. In other words, your house is slowly sinking. Good luck with the clean up. I feel for ya brother.
See, New Zealand is down at the bottom of the world, so when it rains up here, eventually all that water drains down into New Zealand, and makes the ground soggy. That's why they have to move the steering wheel to the other side of the car, see, they are actually upside down, down there, so in order to keep the steering wheel on the left side of the car, they have to move it.
Hey, brother, it's all in good fun, and here's hoping your situation improves quickly.
Thanks for all the support guys!
Christchurch was built on a swamp in the 1800's and folk from England had no idea about plate techtonics! There's about 1/4 mile of silt below the eastern parts of the city that as 7T1 says, turns to liquid during shaking. The silt comes up a few minutes after the shaking stops, just like that oil on the Beverly Hillbillies intro. Was worse this time due to it being high tide at the time. So, it's back to boiling the tap water (if you have it!) and chemical toilets or portaloos. Power is back as well. Now we have the dust as the liquifaction dries out. That, plus low water pressure means very dirty cars! Still, with the roads all cracked up again, you wouldn't want to take your baby out anyway!
Most of us out east are waiting to hear if we have top abandon our suburbs, or if the land can be remedied. So we wait........
