Gramps...make sure you mention to that pretty young lady you appreicate the fact her dress matched your car.

Take it from me -- the father of three daughters--, finding the perfect yellow dress took some work on her part.

Nate99: you're cutting it close.

You are what this is all about, if you can't share whats the sense of having such a beautiful car. Your grandson will cherious that day forever, as will you. He proved to you and himself that he is a responsible young man. I'm on C5 forum as well and you wouldn't beleive the bashings people get on there from others when they post about letting there child drive there vett. This year I let my son, a junior in HS drive my C5 to school the last two days because he brought up his grades like I asked him to and this was our deal. It's near the 500hp mark so you know it took alot of restraint on his part. All went well and he was the talk of the school, and my trust in him doubled. Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Good story, but I'm not going to show it to my grandsons, even though I love them to death. It's all I can take letting my wife drive, when I'm with her. Shes over fifty & was showing her brother how it could burn rubber. That was the last time I let her drive it. I have never let her drive my 1957 hardtop. Lots of Laughs. Gene

That was cool. Wish I had something like that to drive back then.

Atleast it got back home safe and now you can put the other 4 spark plugs back in it!!!

Great story!

My son wanted to drive my '69 to his prom next year, but now we're working on a '76 father/son project. He's put a lot of work into it so far and we are both learning in the process. He knows that the car will eventually go to him when he is older (and can afford insurance on it) and he now has sweat equity invested in the car and will have more respect and appreciation for it much like your grandson.

I'm sure the cop and Mustang driver were wondering what he was doing, but that's a cool pic.

This is such a great thread! great job to both you and your Grandson! I became a grandpa a little over a year ago, so I have lots of time before i have to worry about grand kids borrowing the vette. But my youngest daughter is 13, and she gets mad at me if I work on the vette without her helping me. So I will prob face the Prom question before too long.

Billysvette,

Well, I would hope that she has enough sense to date someone with common sense. So far for her age she is very mature, and loves the vette and is very protective of it. So as long as this continues this way. I hope to let her drive the vette to prom, etc.

Mike.

I told my son and daughter that they can drive to the prom and I will pick it up in the lot and drive it home and then drop it back off as they are getting ready to leave the prom. This way it's not sitting in the parking lot during the prom and so I can see who's driving it at all the time!

I guess it's the cop in me!

Came home from work one time and my 95 was sitting in the back yard. Wife comes out of the house and says, "you might not want to drive your car for a few days because the trooper boys in blue are looking for it."

WHAT DID YOU DO!!!!!!!?????

85 in a 55 on the highway going into Killeen, TX and when he turned around, we played maze craze through town.

Excellent story!!! I'm assuming he hasn't seen your avatar.

That is something he'll "never" forget. You know he appreciated it by taking the extra effort to get the matching shirt and his girl with the dress. Great looking family by the way!!!!

My dad let me take his 75 on a week vacation to grandma's house (120 miles away) when I was 17. Had the time of my life! And then had to drive the Vette in reverse the last two blocks home after the transmission went out. To this day I haven't been able to convince him I did nothing to make that happen. But still a memorable experience that I have never forgotten and never will.

Dad's probably reading this right now. Dad (Bing 76) you there?

Great story, shmoky. I agree with the sentiment about maturity and trust; your grandson earned it and you held up your end of the agreement. That lesson alone will serve him well for the rest of his life.

Good on both of you!

Wish more young-uns could learn the same way: with a good sense of direction so that they will keep making progress as they grow.

Didnt mean anything bad about your daughter, it was just a general question for everybody.the person that they take to the prom usually means a great deal to them (boy friend) ,i was just saying what if the boy says ,if you really love me or care for me ,you would let me drive the corvette.Thats what i would be afraid of,i have a 11 year old daughter and shes perfect to me,but when they get older ,i just dont know. And you know that boy wants to get behind that car

Come on guys,am i nuts about thinking this way or is there some truth to it?

Very Cool! My father let me take his 78 Pace Car to two Senior Proms in 1983 and 1985. I still can't believe it to this day. I had a blast and stole the show driving up to the hotel in that fine car with my beautiful dates.
