so i bought a new gauge bezel since the previous owner hacked the original up to put a radio in. And when i get it, its flat black not gloss!! Am i supposed to dye it? has anyone else had this prob?
The bezel in my '72 has a satin finish, not gloss. Not sure about a '79 specifically, but if I correctly recall pics of late 70's vettes, they also looked to have a satin finish.
My oem one was a "shiny" black on my 80. My new one was a satin finish. I called a few vendors and they all get them from the same place, so we are stuck.
Mine is original and its semi gloss, I wouldnt call it satin exactly, if you want I can take a photo of it for you showing you the finish. It definately is not matt black.
The plastic 77-82 center gauge bezels and shift consoles were not gloss black originally. The finish is more of what I would consider a "dull shine". In my opinion, the finish on the repros looks correct.
I have seen some old bezels with a glossy look to them. I think this is a result of years of cleaning them, effectively polishing the plastic.
Below is a picture of the center gauge bezel in my 81. This picture was taken 4 days after I took delivery of it, in November 1981. Though not a great print, you can tell from the picture, that the bezel and console do not have a gloss finish to them.
The picture's quality is poor because, it's a digital photo of an old print (I'm feeling lazy this morning, I didn't feel like looking for the negative to convert and my only scanner is in my office).
thanks guys! must of been from cleaning it then cause man the old was alot darker in color and very shinny lol guess ill have to buy the shifter piece too so it all matches cause its driving me nuts!
