I love the fastback look and I have a 79, so I would have to say 78+, but it is really up to which ever rear window you like better. I also love the flat window style so I really can't judge too much. I believe the seats and the air intake system was different after 77, but I could be wrong. Either way, I agree with some of the other posts: buy the best conditon car you can afford. It will definitely help in the long run.
