Default Dumb question #1

Purchased a 69' coupe two weeks ago, yesterday tried removing the the shifter ball (automatic). Got the ball to unscrew but it won't come off and now the button will not depress unless you loosen the ball. Tried doing this with selector in all gears and still nothing. What am I missing?

Unscrew the chrome button.
Catch the spring underneath it.
Unscrew the shifter ****.

Thats what I thought, tried it but the chrome button doesn't turn by hand and I don't want to use anything to mar it. I quess as long as I know that the button is threaded also I will figure something out. Thanks Mike!

On stuff like that, I use a paper towel and a small pair of pliers. The paper towel will get good grip on the button, and will keep the pliers from marring it. I might fold the paper towel in half to have two thicknesses before applying the pliers. Good luck!

Vise grips and a shop towel. Easy does it. All you want to do is loosen the button.

Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM) and chassis service manual for your 69. Both will help.

Do you have Bizocco's 1969 Stingray Guidebook? Worth the cost.

The Guidebook is 69 specific. Not a how to, but all kinds of stock reference photographs and interesting information. Nice pics of some fine 69s.

If you don't want to use some Channel-lok pliers and a piece of leather or cardboard to loosen the chrome button, use a strap-plier with a rubber strap to twist it loose. Remove button, spring, then ball to get them off.

The guidebook is excellent. The book by Dobbins on '68-'72 also has great reference photos.

Oh, and start putting the apostrophe before the 69.

You can buy soft jawed pliers. Call your local Snap-On dealer if you dont find them in the hardware store.

Try one of those square rubber fabric gadgets that are used to loosen lids on jars.
