I ordered 225/70 15's from tire rack to replace my old T/A,s (that I believe were 20yrs old )and the same size.
The new tires are different, and IMO don't look as good. Tread design is different, and they don't look as wide. The side wall looks like it has less "meat"/thickness, and appears to be designed for cornering on two wheels
Might have considered a different tire, but too late now
Just thought everyone would like to know-- Other than white lettering, they don't look as much like a muscle car tire.
Yeah, I agree. When I replaced mine the last time which was several years ago, I noticed that the tire (BFG) had changed and I didn't like them. I ended up getting Dunlop GT Qualifiers from Tire rack. They have been really good so far.
The tread design is definitely different. You can tell the age of many TAs by the tread design. Some sizes (235/60) arent even available any more and are on indefinite back order.
I have had a couple different tread patterns on Radial TA's and I thought they all were great.
I have BFG G force on now because I needed the higher speed rating and I'd say they sidewall seems stiffer.
Like I said in the original post---- The BFG tires I replaced were -I believe 1989.
I'm sure my new tires are superior because of better technology.
It,s just that the old tires looked meatier, wider and more aggressive. They also didn't have the tread running down the sidewall as far. Looked better IMO.
Here is the new tire (top). It has this mold line above the BFG that runs the circumference of the tire. Looks MORE noticeable that the photo, and gives the sidewall a lower profile look which also makes the tire look smaller. Also because the tread pattern runs down the sidewall further.
It also only has 4 tread groves VS 5 on the old tires, making them look narrower. Actually, I'm almost certain they ARE narrower, but I disposed of the old tires.
The next photo, showing the old tire, (and a rare shot of a "working" teenager) shows the smoother, slightly bulgier sidewall-more aggressive-wider looking tire. The 3rd. photo shows the 5 groove wider old tires.
they look good so i would not stress over it.i kinda like that tread in the sidewall extending down as it gives the tire a rugged off road look.you didn't say how they ride. (?) good luck with them.

They ride great, but I think the new ones look like re-caps.
I. D. K. .... maybe I'm stuck in the 70's
