'71 Motor ID
I have a question with where on the motor the numbers are located on a small block?
I have been trying to find it since I got it a few weeks ago and I am not sure I am looking in the right location. I just want to know what the number is for my own curiosity.
Thanks for your help!
Jay

fill in your profile an approximate geographic locale
e.g. Where you live may determine which is driver side.
right side (passenger) cylinder bank.
front of block where head mates to block.
in same plane as & in perfect alignment with right deck of block.
a smooth horizontal iron surface with a vin DERIVATIVE stamped into pad

And if it has paint over it, don't scrape it off with a metal object, use finger nail polish remover or paint stripper.
Good luck.

Hi jay,
You may want to check the casting number and date code for the cylinder case too. They're both on the rear flange of the block behind/below the distributor and just in front of the bell housing.
For many people they're a part of the number business too.
Regards,
Alan

Here is a picture of the front passenger side of the engine block. Where should I look from here?

Scrape off paint to read the numbers.

Here ya go:
71 small block shown. Yours will be similar. Larger characters indicate engine ID stamp; smaller characters are the VIN derivitive.
