Default Vacuum Leak....

I put a new crate motor in my 81 a few months ago. I would like to check around the intake manifold for vacuum leaks, can anyone suggest something to spray that will not make a mess of my new motor?

I have never tried it but, I have read that spraying water in a mist form works well. if your engine stumbles you have found your leak.

Thanks guys, Rick, I'll try the water mist first and if it does not work I'll try what Qwank said, carb cleaner. Have a good weekend.

Propane bottle with a fuel hose sliped over the torch end. Just guide the hose where you want and if rpms change you found the leak.

Carb cleaner is best. It is volatile and will provide more "fuel" to the intake charge if it is actually ingested when you spray it. Spray small puffs of cleaner directly at the gasket area you want to check out. Spray at one area, then wait to hear if the engine revs up a bit (or not). Then move to another area. Spray along both sides of the intake manifold to cylinder head gasket areas and around the base/throttle shafts of the carburetor.

Carb cleaner makes a great paint stripper. Keep this in mind before using it on external parts.

That's why you shoot little puffs of cleaner right at the gasket when you test. Never get the surface "wet".
