Hi everyone! I have just spent the last 6 hours putting a Weiand 8004 intake and a 600 Edelbrock carb. on my 80 with stock hood. After the carb was setting on the manifold I checked hood clearence to see what
air cleaner to buy. It's at least an inch to high with nothing on it!!!

What air cleaner are you using? There are many threads here that indicate you need an early 70's reproduction air cleaner assembly when installing aftermarket high rise intakes. Take a look at my rig with a high rise Edelbrock Performer, stock Q-jet and 1/4" phenolic spacer - lost of room as evidenced by the play doh. Of course on earlier cars there will be less space - but on yours my guess is that you have about the same roominess as my long hood???
...the beauty of a long hood...

Because after spending hours looking at different forums on the subject, this carb/intake was supposed to fit without problems. Seems like most were just guessing. I've learned a lesson.

You're right, that is a hard lesson. Always take your own measurements, regardless of what others say.
So whats the plan, L-88 hood, or find a set up that fits under the stock hood with a drop base air filter assembly?

I guess I'll go back to the origional 80 alum intake and get a carb adapter for the new carb. One thing that threw me is that I had a 77 with a edelbrock single plane and 750 Holley with no clearence problems. I think I read that starting in 80 Corvettes had a lower profile hood.
I don't know where you bought your parts nor where you got your advice; but you now know where not to buy parts and get advice. {Can you say....the "Zone"??}
I have a 1980 with the stock hood, Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, Holley 600 carb, dropped base air cleaner, 3" element, and I've never measured it, but's pretty close. The Holley is definitely a little taller than the Q-jet was. I have seen '80-'82 vettes with edelbrock carbs, must be an especially tall manifold.

After lying awake pondering my problem most of the night, I remembered checking the old manifold height without the carb. Checking the new manifold today they were practically the same. When I was lowering the hood it cocked a little and I THOUGHT it was hitting the carb. After more checking I have almost 4'' for my air cleaner.
Thanks for the update, had me goin there for a bit, checkin other threads. My engine and older Weiand Stealth are at the tuners and I couldn't measure.
