A friend came by here today in a '82 Vette. I guess this is some sort of Pace Car or Collector edition as it is grayish with another color on some striping. The car was rough. What interested me were the wheels. It had what i guess are Collector Edition wheels.Big turbo looking things with many spokes radiating out from a center cap. Can someone tell me the value of such wheels. Although the car was rough, the wheels looked pretty nice. In need of cleaning but pretty nice. Thanks for any help.
Mike
The 82 Collectors Edition was a package that included a special paint color (sort of a champagne color) with shaded stripes on the hood and doors, an opening rear hatch window, a special interior with shading on the door panels and seats (similar to the exterior shading), and unique "turbine" styles wheels.
The wheels are no longer available new, though you can still buy center caps for them (at about $135 each). I've seen good used sets of Collector Edition wheels go for as much as $1,000.
The style of these wheels is virtually identical to the mid-year knock-off wheels... just 8" wide instead of 6". With a few key components most of the major vendors carry, they can be made to look exactly like the mid-year knock-offs (or bolt-on's as it were).
This set has deteriorated clearcoat, but the wheels are otherwise perfect. There are usually a couple of sets for sale at Carlisle in August and typically priced at around $800. I don't know if they sell, but that's typically the asking price.
