How about a Buick Reatta. I bought my Corvette to replace my Reatta, but it just hasn't sold yet. Darn!! Really comfortable ride, loaded with every option you could want and you get lots of people wondering what they are. The 3.8's are just about bullet proof.
As an owner of a C3 and an Opel GT, they are both fun to drive however nothing is like a C3. I enjoy putting them together and hearing the comments. The poor mans Corvette, what happened to your Corvette did it get wet???? Is that a smaller Corvette????
Very funning and interesting.
FYI
The Opel GT was very prown to rust and there is approximately 8000 left.
Being an owner of both of these cars I really enjoyed this thread.........
Tom, post some pics!
I always liked the GT back in the day. The body style profile resembles the C3 - if you squint real hard - hence the "poor man's corvette" moniker. I could see getting one that I could drive around town when premium gas for the vette goes over $5 per gallon.
Another "poor mans Corvette" was the Datsun 240Z. (I know its Japanese) Granted, good condition 240's are getting up there in price but 260's and 280's can still be had for reasonable prices. Plus they IRS, front discs, many had A/C, EFI became available in '77 as well as the optional 5-speed I think or you can swap one in very easily from a 280ZX, its a hatchback so you do have some usable trunk space, and the styling is very attractive in my opinion. I had a red '77 280Z with a 5-speed swapped in and I loved it. However if I pick up another one it will be a 240Z since they are significantly lighter and just seemed faster for the few I have driven.
The old "Z" cars were pretty cool looking, but I will never understand how anybody could think an Opel GT was a cool looking car. I would take a Mustang II hatchback with a v-8 any day. On the other hand, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing, so if ya like 'em, then, by all means, knock yourself out!
I had a lot of fun as a teen in an Opel GT. I was just looking at them the other day. A high revving 2 liter 4 and a 5 speed would make it a fun, unique ride! As is, though, it's a fun little tosser... and I think good looking!
As many have said, GTs are notorious rust buckets, and few are around. I always dug them too. BTW, work out your right arm well. You'll need the extra strength to raise the headlights!!
