Default Pillar post seal question

I have searched, read and looked at the AIM and still cannot figure this out. when installing the reveal molding and weather strip retainer to the windshield pillar there is a foam seal with adhesive tape on one side. I am going to try to make this simple for myself. After pealing the tape what do I stick the foam strip to?
  1. The pillar post
  2. The reveal molding (which side)
  3. Back of the weatherstrip retainer
Thanks,

Hi R71,
The foam strip was on the inside of the ss trim piece and sealed against the rearof the windshield post.
A material similar to 3M Strip Seal was put between the weatherstrip retainer and the ss trim.
The AIM describes them both in inches which means they didn't come out of a tube or caulk gun.
These pics are from my 71.
Regards,
Alan

You can see the black foam is stuck on the flat part of the ss trim right where the trim curves around the glass,

Hello Alan
So the foam strip adheres to the windshield post or the inside of the SS molding? The strips are longer than the molding so I am thinking the windshield pillar?
Thanks, Scott

The thin foam seal goes between the pillar molding and the weatherstrip retainer. It is pinched between the two. In other words.. Windshield molding goes on.. then the foam seal, then the weatherstrip retainer. Hope this makes sense.

Dang.. I have a great picture of this at my office but not on this machine.

Hi,
On my 71, as my second picture shows, the only thing between the ss trim and the w/s retainer was the sticky black sealer. The picture shows it had a string in it; I guess to stop it from breaking into pieces as it was installed. On my 71, the same material (with string) was used to hold the vacuum formed vapor barrier to the door behind the door trim panel.
The foam strip was definitely between the ss trim and the windshield a-pillar.
Regards,
Alan

As Alan describes should be the correct way as it's a one owner car i inversed the caulk with the foam to avoid sticky caulk from comming out of the two ss pieces and making a mess. The foam gives it a nice clean thin black seperation ( note i'll avoid driving my car in the rain, and it's a rest mod)

I am not the first owner of this 71 by any means. When I took it apart the foam was stuck to the pillar post itself, but so much of this car has been touched by the hands of "Bubba" I am never sure what is correct so I refer to AIM and here for help.
