Default 76 carb question...

Gang:

Just bought a 1976 Auto L82 with stock Q-jet. Motor is stock and has about 30K on it. I want to add a beefier carb with mechanical secondaries, keeping the stock manifold.

Has anyone done this and what were the results?
I was thinking about a Holley or an Edelbrock spread bore.

Please let me know your thoughts as I want to buy this at Carlisle.

Thanks in advance.

'Beefier' carb????

You've already got the 'beefiest' carb and will gain nothing by swapping. Put your wallet away for something worthwhile.

Your saying there is no way to increase performance with an aftermarket carb applied correctly?

In a nutshell, that's correct. You've got a low HP stock engine. The qjet is about 150% of what it needs already.

Keep your current carb, buy Cliff Ruggles book on quadrajets and change your distributor curve. You will be much happier and wont be wasting money.

The above post is exactly correct. The Q-Jet you already have is more carb than you will ever need. It also has the capability of being economical when you don't push the secondaries. A Holley can't do that!

Any good, well-built carb which has enough capacity for your engine can be tuned strictly for performance....and you will get the same results from them all. But, that means the Q-Jet you already have can do that as well. Save your buck$; learn about the carb you have and work on it to make it 'sing'. Buy a copy of Cliff Ruggles booklet on "How to Rebuild and Modify the Quadrajet Carburetor" for less than $20. Doug Roe has a similar booklet and it has good info on the inner workings of the Q-Jet. But, Ruggles book is much better on how to rebuild and modify the carb.
