I'm not a Corvette owner yet but working on it. Following a few leads I got from members here and also plan to attend the Corvettes at Carlisle event in PA later this month.
Question: Has anyone on here ever bought a car from this event? If so, what is the usual procedure? Do you leave a deposit and arrange for pick up after the event or do you complete the sale on the spot and drive/trailer it home that day?
Hi m,
I'd think if you went to the Carlisle web site there would be information describing what services are available.
There is an office on the grounds that can handle title transfer and temporary tags.
Regards,
Alan
They will actually have on site a place to complete the total transaction if you want to do it. It can be yours when you leave so you could drive or trailer it. I had a friend that purchased one on the spot up there and did all the paper right away. Just be careful you do a very good look over the car. Sometimes people get excited about a purchased and buy without doing a good enough check of the Vette. I would recommend making an itemized check list of things to check and mark each one as you go so nothing is missed. Everyone that sells up there will have the car looking very nice on the outside and obvious areas. Make sure you check all the other things as well. Once its in your name theres no going back! Good luck and an early congrast on becoming a Vette owner!!

Rod is correct. They have a PA DMV set-up at the show. You will roll away with PA temp. tags and have to re-register the car when you get back to your home state.
Things to remember...
Call your insurance company before you go, let them know what you are up to and if they have an after-hours number to add your new car. Even if it's temporary until you get a less expensive insurance company, like Grundy.
Make sure you confirm with the owner that it is road worthy, really road worthy. There are a lot of title jumpers at the show that could give two hoots if you end up on the side of the road counting semis for 3 hours in the rain.
Thanks for the response! Most likely be going alone (no friends yet who are interested in Vettes). I would most likely bring a car trailer and tow it back. Do most guys bring cash or can you get a certified check up to a certain amount? I hate to carry that kind of doe around if you know what I mean? Never done anything like this before. Bought a bunch of cars on eBay but I always knew how much to bring in a certified check.
I was looking at the seminars and they sound very interesting. Plan on making a day of it. That reminds me...what is the best day to attend? I am off from work on Friday and Saturday.
Since this is about carlisle,i heard that if i drive my c3 to it,its not free parking anymore,is this true? I think i will take my car this year,do people bother the cars, steal things? wheres the safest place to park in there?

You are correct, they are now charging $10 for Corvette only parking in the fairgrounds. I've never seen or heard of anyone even touching someone else's car, but I guess anything is possible. In the past, Corvettes would enter at gate 1 and park in a fenced in area within the grounds. There is an orange "snow" fence between the vette only parking and swap meet. You can also enter at Gate 5 to park as well. I have seen a lot of guys hanging out at their cars and even detailing them in this parking area. I personally pre register my car and park on the hill for the public to see my car. Pre-registering also gives me 2 passes and a "goody bag"/t-shirt. I stay for the whole weekend, so this is actually less expensive for my Dad and me to go. If I were you, I'd park away from the swap meet, and enter through Gate 5. There is less foot traffic there, and if you're really concerned someone will mess with your car, it's less likely to happen there. When I don't want to pay for parking, I just park on a side street and walk a couple blocks. Never had any problems. Just my $.02. -Neal

Hey, that sounds great. I'll PM you later and maybe get your cell # and meet up at Carlisle.

also, in regards to thefts, they do happen. was it last year or before when all those gas caps were stoeln off cars?
Still looking. Found an '81 on here that looks promising too. Unfortunately all the Vettes that look decent are hours drive for me. Narrowing it down though.

Yes, unfortunately, some gas caps were stolen last year. Even more unfortunately, it wasn't the first time. Stuff disappearing from the vendor area has been reported a few times over the years, but that seems like a pretty rare thing. The Carlisle events staff publicly acknowledged that the gas cap thefts have taken place, and that they are working to improve security to reduce the possiblity of it happening again in the future.
I think they are serious about it, and when dealing with them, they seem to be great people who are committed to putting on a first class event. Unfortunately, on this one, I think they are pushing water uphill. Although I appreciate that they are working hard to make things better, the reality is that Corvette parts are worth money, and unless it is a serial numbered part, they are basically impossible to trace. Lots of criminals and/or somewhat regular people who have no respect for the property of others, are smart enough to figure this out. Those folks see Carlisle, and many other events like it, as a huge opportunity.

Im in the same boat as you, will be looking for potential buys in a couple of weeks. From what I heard from other members, you can get temp plates and insurance on the spot. As for bringing money vs. check .... some members advised me that the seller may not trust your check, even if its bank certified so I'll most likely bring cash with me. I will also have to drive it home since don't have a trailer available.
I'm still not sure what the best day to go is. Some say Thursday because good cars go quick, some say Saturday/Sunday because sellers will be more motivated to sell towards the end (but then you have the risk of good cars being gone already). Any input from other members?
I will also be looking for someone with more experience to assist me in looking over potential purchases.....any help would be apreciated...
I've got $7500-$8000 to play with on a Vette. Man, I hate carrying around that much cash (80 $100 bills makes quite a bulge in ones pants). I can understand sellers not wanting to accept checks. The teller at my back said they had recieved several bad/forged cashier checks in the past year. Guess it's gonna have to be cash though. If you see me at Carlisle...that won't be a banana in my pocket...lol!

HAHAHAHA good 1! it may not be a banana but it might be the excitement from seeing all those vetts!
$8k? What year are you looking for? Seems a little low...

'76-81. Not looking for a show car but not looking for a major project either. I've found a bunch on CraigsList and this forum in my price range and a couple of very nice prospects.
