I have developed a problem with locking my drivers side door.If I open the door I can lock and unlock the door with no problem, but with the door closed,it does not want to lock unless I pull the rod inside the door, I have sprayed lubed the lock mechanism but it did not help, could my door striker be the cause of the problem, I am thinking it could because it locks and unlocks easily with the door open, anyone have any ideas on this?
Bought a new door latch. Worked like a charm right away. Spent hours removing/cleaning/lubing/replacing the one to no avail. When holding it in my hands it appeared to work fine. It wasn't until I bought a new one that I could tell the old one required more force to open.
While not the most satisfying route, buying a new one was certainly the quickest fix.
BTW - after all of the work, modifications, etc. I have done to my 73, fixing the door latch has been the repair my wife enjoyed the most.
Had the same issue with both doors in the past on the 77. I bought good used mechanisms to solve the problem . I did notice the old one had a broken rivet so it would expand when turning the key and jam up. One other thing. Check that the door alignment hasn't changed.
