I posted this at another forum bit figured I would try here also.My car is currently in several pieces, and I am trying to decide what I am going to do with it..I know I will be leaving the body kit on the car, but I really would like to find out more about the mods done to the car, and possibly who did them..now I know that most "vette" people think my car is just somebodys slapped together custom junk..but the more I have looked into it, the more I am beginning to think otherwise..It is currently Yellow and black..it was Candy Apple Red.(Orig it was SC Gray/Leather AC/Auto base 72 coupe)...my car has a Motion (style) hood (with stripes) on it..I have seen several pics of the motion hoods and my car def has a motion (style) hood..the car has a widebody (IMSA/style kit) the body kit is def not a Greenwood, and neither an Eckler's can-am..it has smooth quarters (no scoops) and is much wider than anything ecklers made..(so wide that 295/50/15s with a 3 inch adapter still are covered) I think that the body kit is made by chevy (it has a part number)..but things get weird then the tail panel has 8 taillights..and a spoiler (it appears to be a modified camaro "motion type" widened to fit the widebody)..the tail panel is not Eckler's it is all chevy part numbers, except the last 2 lights, they are handmade..the decklid had provisions for louvers that someone discarded before I got the car..my engine had a holley system Z intake (with extra ports), a matching 4160 carb..mr gasket small air cleaner with custom wingnut, and chromed hooker headers with covers..all pretty common I suppose..but I am hoping to find out some history on the car..especially what the front may have looked like..ie. fixed headlights..grilles..etc...and if anyone knows any history on the car..I bought the car in 2007..I got it from PA..and at one point I know it had work done to it in Sarrasotta...I don't really care if it is work anything or not..I just want a period correct custom..and would like it to be like it was when it was customized.....any help or opinions appreciated, thanks.
also..I asked the guys at Greenwood a few years ago, and they said mine had a GM body kit..a race kit not a street kit..that it is 4" wider on each side than the Eckler Can Am, in the back and 2" wider in the front..if you look really close you will see they are different..now the motion spyder has a wider body, and it is the only other car I have seen with the kit mounted like mine..(kinda lower than most of the cars I have seen..including the Barris kits, and race cars)..also seeing it next to an ecklers Can Am my quarters are longer skirted..the car is not lowered, or worn suspension..the body is just bigger..
well I've contacted several custom corvette builders, the most I have been able to find out so far is it appears to be mostly made up of Motion Parts..but no one seems to remember ever seeing the car, no reply from Barris or Korky..but I'm pretty sure it was always an east coast car anyway..my main goal is to find out what the paint scheme was and the nose/grille treatment..as I am at a loss on those..currently the car is off the frame in several pieces, and I now have most of the pieces I need for the resto..just trying to figure out the grille.
Try researching the VIN with your (and surrounding states) Department of Motor Vehicles. Maybe you can find the original owner and track to whoever did the mods. A well written letter OR call their title division and ask if there is a "car guy" that works in the office. It worked for me to find my original car.
Motion made 4 Spyders (plus one prototype) from 1976-1978. All had a slant back window and a '73-77 style hi rise hood. 3 were yellow one was red. I believe only the red one's whereabouts are known today. Here's where things get interesting, prior to production of the Spyders, Motion made at least one Cafe Racer out of a '72 convertible. This one featured the racing widebody kit and a Phase III hood. Might he have made a coupe? You need to look all over for extra holes where electric fuel pumps might have been mounted (near the tank) and electronic ignition (under the hood). A hole (or repair of same) on the passenger side trans tunnel would be evidence that the car had an overdrive unit. At that point, a check for $2500 to Joel Rosen to authenticate the car might be in order.
Now that I've gotten your hopes up, a word of caution. Back in the day these mods were common and all the parts (except the hood) were available from multiple sources. Joe's body shop made more of these than Motion ever did. It's a needle in the haystack, but at least you're in the right haystack. As for the lights, fiberglass is easier to mod than steel so everybody thinks the can do it and gives it a shot. The good news is it's (relatively) easy to reverse if you find a PO slapped them in there after the car was built. Happy hunting, let us know if you catch anything.
Wow I did not know there was ever a widebody with a phase 3 hood, I would love to see that..my car was never a convertible, it's numbers all match..the only thing not stock on the motor is the bolt on stuff..all of it motion catalog type stuff..nothing fancy though..no fly eye, no CD ignition..it has an early 75 HEI distributor that has been in the car since it was red, it had hooker sidemounts, but you can see where different exhaust was..and I will have to check for fuel pumps..I really think it is just a catalog car..but I've never see any car with the GT spoiler stretched across the body kit, or any phase 3 hood on a widebody..but anything is possible..I've also not seen the 6 light treatment on a chrome bumper widebody, my cars nose is still chrome bumper..my car also had motion style louvers on the back window..the tabs are still there but the louvers are long gone...thanks so much for your replies keep me posted if you have any more info..I would love to see the scheme on that 72 vert..thanks.J.
It's not the same car (this one doesn't have the "egg crates" in the fenders), but it sure reminds me a lot of a Corvette that was here in South Jersey in the mid 70's. It was built by Carty's Corvettes of Waterford Township, NJ, around 74-75. I'm pretty sure that this one was built using the factory pieces.
The picture below was taken in April 76, at the old Aquarian Corvette Club show, at Barlow Chevrolet.
That is a really cool pic, thanks for posting..I just added the egg crates to the car when I got it....that car doesn't have the motion hood or spoiler..but it looks like the same body kit...do you know what the rear looked like?..thanks

To be honest, I don't recall. Like I said, the picture is from 1976. The cream colored convertible behind it, was also done by Carty's. I use to see it around a lot, as it belonged to someone who lived near me, and it was his daily driver. The red "fat fendered" car showed up at a couple other local shows, and then disappeared.
I want to say that the backs of the rear fender flairs were open (like on racing versions), with a stock 72 rear tail lamp panel and stock bumpers. The rear bumpers were in the stock location, with sides of the bumpers that wrap around the body, actually inside the openings at the back of the flairs. I think?
I still have a few old friends from my Aquarian Corvette Club days, that may have other pictures of that car, or may remember it. I'll ask around this week.

Cool I've been collecting pictures off the net of custom corvettes ever since I bought my car in 07..I don't think I've ever seen that 72, I have seen the spyder motion cars online before, well the yellow one and the red one, and a different yellow one with a turbo..I would really love to see the Cafe racer car though, I have been researching motion cars online for awhile now and have not ever seen any widebody with a phase III hood, like mine..again thanks for the replies, keep me posted if you see any crazy widebodys..
another thing that is really odd to me, is that the car has the original drivetrain..and there really is not anything special about it that can be seen..when I got it it had a small mr gasket air cleaner, and a 600 holley vac secondary carb..the rear appears to be stock 3.08 gears, although I was told it was a Big Block rear (it has HD suspension) but I thought all 72s with AC had that..it has ac, and the motor revved to 6500 easy. but didn't idle too well (after fired a lot) so I pulled it out..I was thinking of putting a hotter 350 in it(something to back-up the cars image), but don't know if I should or not??
Well I have found a few strange things..first the decklid top appears to be only gold (on the part after where the blinds were)..no candy red(like the rest of the car) ..and there appears to be a ribbon scheme in gold on top of the front fenders (i can't really tell the shape, only that it is gold then red)..and something that seems odd to me the t-tops are stock paint under the yellow.(no red)..so maybe the car had different tops when it was customized..but why it has the original tops on it now is anybody's guess IDK..PS..anyone have any pics of a phase 3 motion widebody (not spyder)???
Here is a wide body C3 you may want to check out. I briefly saw the car in person when I was checking out a silver '71 they had. The body needs some paint work but with some time and maybe a full respray it will look a lot better.

I bought that car!! I'm super excited about it. I got a good deal, and i love it. I don't know exactly who made the body kit, other than it's based on the Greenwood Turbo GT, and i was trolling the sites reading all of the posts on widebody C3s and saw this reference to the car i just bought!
