My Garmin Nuvi just gave up the ghost.

What is the current GPS that you recommend and what features make you recommend it. I am looking for a portable unit that I can transfer
for car to car.

I usually use the navi that is factory in my truck but when I'm in one of the other cars and need it I use the Tom Tom app for iPhone. It works great, so I would recommend TomTom. I've installed it on 3 phones so it was well worth the $50 price (if you have an iPhone).

I have a Droid X smartphone with Verizon for cell and don't use any car gps anymore....just use Google Maps which is excellent...good maps, either visual andwritten or you can have her talk to you with excellent instructions plus visual and NO attitude if you make a mistake!

rugerman...yep, it sure did. Garmin I think. When you went past a street the first correction was done in even tones, calm cadence. If you missed that one the next was faster and in higher tone, if you missed that it got positively clipped tones, fast speech and almost yelled at you...relatively. She was a bitch. Much prefer the even voice of Google Maps on my Droid X smartphone!

with smart phones there really isn't a big need for car gps separate units....maybe if built into the dash but I put my old Garmin away. Ought to toss it out.

I have a Garmin.. and leave it at home now that I have it on my phone. The phone seems to be always up to date vs. the Garmin is always in need of an update.

I agree with the Google maps nav on my android phone. best nav I've ever used in my life. If you don't have a smart phone, a new Garmin Nuvi would be my choice.

I think the first nav that I bought was a garmin and it worked well. What you, well I, look for in a navigation system is simplicity. I hate all the extras. I just want something that put in the address and it gives me the best route to get there. Im not great with electronics so I dont like all the doo-dads.

If I didn't have an iPhone, I'd just invest in a good set of maps. Just to be period correct and all.

so many people now have smart phones like Iphones or Droids which have very effective gps map apps on them that the gps they used to have arent even used anymore. I don't even know where mine is.

Perhaps before buying one you should put a note in the For Sale/Wanted section of the forum and see if someone like that will give you theirs just for the shipping which would be minimal.

They are becoming antiques as technology has moved past them

Don't know much about the Iphones or Droids. Do you have to pay a monthly fee for the GPS app ? And are you happy with a smaller screen on the phone compared to a dedicated GPS unit?

Don't know about Iphones but my DroidX uses android operating and google maps is on the phone when you get it. No extra monthly fees just cell phone costs for a smart phone which also gives me email, texting, seven screens, etc. Much bigger than tiny flip phone screens.

On google maps the roads are always very up to date. The map app when you open it locates you and then you can get directions from and to.....then it can either show it to you on the screen as you drive with written directions on top or you can have that and a voice which accurately tells you what to do as you approach turns, etc. Your choice. Fantastic travel tool in new places.

don't know how it would handle travel in Europe. Assume Canada would be okay though I've not taken it to Canada. I use my cell phone as my main phone so have the costs of phone either way. Once owned, there is no longer any point in a tom tom, garmin, etc. separately. I just have a car cig. lighter charger and on a long trip just keep my cell phone charged with that.

One of the best devices I have ever seen is my Droid and Iphone owners I've talked with say the same about theirs.
