I have a 77 L82 and I took the aluminum valve covers off to clean and polish and noticed cracks inside the valve covers is this common or do I need to pitch these and get new ones? thanks vince
Die cast aluminum stuff has lines in the surface that look like cracks...but they don't go thru the material. If you are concerned, turn the cover upside-down, and put some soapy water in it. Let it sit a while and see if it leaks. If not, it won't leak oil splash (which is all it will see). If you have an air compressor or a can of compressed air, you can shoot some at that [wet] crack to see if any bubbles show up.
Thanks guys , I'll take some pictures and try to post them but they sure look like cracks. I showed the guys I work with and they thought that it was cracks also. thanks vince
