Any advice on reinstalling my windshield for a '77. I have the glass out and clean, the frame is good and primed (w/epoxy primer) and the chrome trim is out, separated and polished. I also have the 3M Windo-Weld Ribbon Sealer kit but no setting blocks. The ribbon is a 1/4" x 15' round bead.
Not too sure on how to begin setting this up... Do I just work backward so the windshield is net against the backside of the chrome trim once I screw all the pieces in?
There should be a couple of setting blocks with the butyl tape. You need to do a dry fit (using the blocks) if your height is not correct the trim will not fit correctly. Make sure all your clips are in place and the chrome corner moldings are in place and secured first once the windshield is in place that is it you can not reach these screws that secure these.
When I did mine I used a little masking tape to hold the blocks in place. I found the center of the windshield and the center on the windshield frame and marked them to help center the windshield during the dry fit. Once satisfied with the dry fit I used masking tape to mark both sides, top and bottom of the windshield frame and glass for realignment during the final fitting. You will need a partner to help. Do a search here as there are several threads on installing windshields.
Let the pros do it. Got an auto glass shop near you?
The price should not be that bad. I had my windshield replaced last month and even with some window frame rust repair, the total cost was under $700 and that is even including the cost of the new windshield (non date stamped).
