Default Body Mount Shims ????????

When I pulled my body from the chassis on my 69 coupe, I laid out the shims on the floor "in order" and took a picture of the set-up display. As you can guess, that was two years ago; after the mount display has been picked up and now the picture is no place to be found.

Is there a standard number of shims per mount point or are there unique measurments at each location that determines the amount of shims to be used (per mount). I'm almost certain it's the latter but hoping there is some unusual way to make this easy.

How do I ensure the right amount of shims are installed per mount point? Anyone run into this before? Also, I have changed from the solid body mounts to the rubber version.

I did a search for this issue and came up with nuth'in.

Thanks all

Terry

Hi Terry,
At St. Louis the frame was measured and the shim count needed at each mount was written on the frame. After the shims were placed the body was dropped on the frame.
In your case, I believe I'd start with 3 shims on each mount, then drop the body and add or subtract the shims as required to get the door and hood gaps the way you'd like them.
Regards,
Alan

Great advice from Alan, it is about the only way you can do it now. Put a little tip on the shims so they don't fall off, when you drop the body you will see the difference and you can add or delete as needed.

Alan,
Thank you very much for offering a starting point. I currently have the body sitting on the frame with the 4 cage mounts with no shims. Without shims on thos 4 locations, there is about a 2-3 shim gap on all of the corners. I do not have the doors or front clip mounted yet so looks like I'll just leave all of the mounts loose until I at least get the doors on to check the clearances. Sounds like the front clip is going to be tricky.

Would it be better to mount the clip to the frame and adjust the cage to it or clamp, screw or rivit the clip to the cage and make shim adjustments from there? I know not to bond anything together until I know it's absolutly correct but just trying to see how to get there from here.

Thanks again Alan

Terry

Hi Terry,
I believe the body should be on the chassis and the doors installed.
Then mount the clip; you'll then need to adjust the clip/doors/hood until all the gaps are the way you want them. Then bond the clip to the cowl.
Regards,
Alan

Hey, I think I have one of those fixtures in my toolbox. Always wondered what it was. Maybe this will be easier than I thought.
