I seem to recall a thread where it was mentioned that it made no difference to the car's performance, and that it should be kept on for legal reasons.

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. The car may run rough and you might be in violation of pollution control laws.

When working properly, you should see no difference in performance with the EGR in place.

A properly operating EGR valve allows you to run the timing further advanced without pinging. Advanced timing provides better performance and fuel economy. GM vehicles didn't react as badly as some Ford models to inoperative EGR's. Some of the Fords of the mid to late 70's rattled so bad with a plugged EGR they were scary to hear.

Hmm cleaner engine bay, cleaner air we breath? Tough choice.

yeah but most guys on this forums switch to true duals and get rid of their catalytic converters too, and with the mileage you get out of these guys; clean air is what most don't care about.

if you have the opening in the intake then keep the EGR its a good thing. no reason to take it out. it doesnt hurt any performance as long as its working.

You can use a block-off plate under it to keep it original looking without it actually working.
