Default Question on 76 air

The air conditioner on my 76 hardly blows . Its like blowing on low speed. A friend of mine has the same problem and put a new fan motor in his but it didn't help. Does anyone else have air that does not blow very hard? Any thing to try to get it to blow harder? Several people said even new they didn't blow air very hard but I use to own one back then and I don't recall anything about the air not blowing hard so I think it did blow normal back then.

the fan relay looked ok. Its still has the clips on the studs that they hook to. How do you check the fan resistor? also is there some kind of high speed fan fuse to check?

You have two wire's coming from the fan/squirrel cage. One positive, one neg. The positive is connected to the motor of the fan. The neg. is connected to a screw holding the fan to the box. This is located under the fender. Tight place but doable. And yes it helps!!

Fan could be just fne. Seals around the ar vents nsde the cabin could be rotted, lettng the air blow out behind the dash and not into the cabin. The easiest one to check is the passenger lower dash. That should let you know what the rest might look like.

I agree with sweeet76.

Do you hear the motor change speeds while moving the selector switch? If so the resistor is fine.
When you move the selector switch to the highest setting, does the fan completely shut off? If it does, the relay is bad. If not the relay is fine.

The ventilation system in these cars flat out sucks. As mentioned, check the ductwork behind the dash. Like most aspects of the C3, Chevy put all their engineering into looks and must have run out of money when it came to mechanical. Actual functions of these cars seem to be a cobbled together afterthought. Using a separate high speed blower relay is one example....mounting the relay right over the hot exhaust manifold is another example of 70s GM idiocy.

The stock blower is pathetic. I recall a spacer being made that allows a slightly larger fan/blower wheel to be installed. It supposedly helped but wasn't a cure all.

Also don't forget you may have 35 years of dirt and leaves plugging up the evaporator and/or heater core. As far as getting at them to clean them....you don't want to know!
