Sting Ray = 1967
last year "stingray" appeared on a corvette = 1976
last year of the C3 = 1982

My 1976 has the Stingray emblem which was the last year the for the emblem.
I have seen a 1977 dealer brochure that refers to the Corvette as a Stingray but no emblem on the car.

Most people I talk to consider the entire C3 line as Stingrays while acknowledging that 1976 was the last year where an emblem was issued on the vehicle.

Hope this helps clarify.

Sting Ray (two words) 1963-1967
Stingray (one word) 1969-1976

1968 no Stingray emblem
1977-1982 no Stingray emblem
1984 to present day not ever a Stingray except for the Stingray III concept car.

I call the 1968-1982 a shark body when referring to the C3 but I guess you can refer to them any way you want.

most of the public that see a C3 68-82, think they are looking at a Stingray...mostly because of the movies etc

the Shark or Coke-bottle shape suggests to the average Joe that they are Stingrays

It's just not that complicated.

63-67 = "Sting Ray", 2 words.

"StingRay" = one word, capital R? Never used.

68 = No emblem at all. Some ad paperwork misused Sting Ray references from the 63-67 line, but lots of ad copy made mistakes.

69-76 = had the Stingray emblem. Technically, this is what a "Stingray" is.

77-82 = Continued the same C3 shark, coke-bottle body, but was no longer called a Stingray.

I'm not sure why Chevrolet/GM did this, but there is no such thing as a "Sting Ray". Probably the most annoying aspect of the C2s.

Does anybody besides me feel that the C-3 designation should have ended after 1976 for the reason mentioned above?

Or maybe 'cause from '68 to '82 the Corvette changed into a much different car....Technically speaking.

Not looking to start an argument here(seems awful easy to do that in this forum anymore) Just opinions.

Ok first it was Sting Ray from 63-67.

In 69-76 they changed the badge to say Stingray

In 68 there was no badge, so why does everyone insist that it is a Stingray but after 76 with no badge it isn't? The only argument that I could think of is that it was in some advertising so that makes it a Stingray. The advertising also calls it Sting Ray in 68.

My question is since it has no badge then how can everyone make an issue that it is a Stingray at all. If it IS a Stingray then since the brochures have it spelled both ways how can anyone state that it wasn't meant to be a Sting Ray and the change came in 69?

This topic comes up every few months but as of yet I have never seen anything posted that proved what GM meant it to be. I would really be interested in reading something stated by GM on the topic more so than just opinions. Why did they change it from one word to 2 and why did they exclude the 68, 77-82 models.

I can't lie...I never felt 100% confident when my 81 was called a Sting Ray...or when I wanted to call it a Sting Ray just for the fact that it didn't "say" Sting Ray on it. But then I say...well damn the 68 and the 77 didn't say it either....AAARRGGGHHHHH

For anyone out there that wants a Sting Ray...and feel good and confident that you have a Sting Ray...buy a 69-76 that says Sting Ray.

Not to change the Subject but I emailed a guy today about an 81...and he said it had an L-82 engine...I politely said..."Oh I only thought L81's we're available for that yr" He responded..."The L-82 was an option that could be ordered with an 81 vette".....the guy also says he has owned the car for 13 yrs, and in my mind I'm like "you would think he knows what he has"...I asked him if it was the original engine and he said yes(thinking maybe someone put in an L-82 and lied to him and said it was original)....Am I mistaken...wasnt the L81 the only engine choice for 1981??? Or is this a similar situation to someone selling a 1983 Corvette Sting Ray

It is just a badge.

just sort of a side question here but looking at your avatar does anyone on the forums here actually own one of those rebodied vettes like they used on miami vice?

and how are the rebodied replica's generally perceived by the vette community?
