I just purchased a '69 390 big block t-top 4 speed car with a transplanted 454. The temperature gauge is not hooked up although I see a temperature sending unit on the driver side cylinder head. Does anyone have a pic of a '69 big block engine bay showing where I can find the wire that goes to the sender (I'm assuming it's green.)
Hi J...,
Originally the temperature sender wire had a woven protective sleeve on it; looking for that might help you locate the wire too.
Regards,
Alan
This is a sb, but I believe the protective sleeve was the same on bb engines.
now go find the correct sensor, so your gauge will read correctly.
$20 says your current sensor is the wrong one. (69-454)
and don't go to Auto Zone and ask the kid behind the counter.
I followed the threads in the C2 section for the correct sensor in my '63. With the new gauges I assume the sensor is different. Any hints on the correct sensor for my application (or was 69-454 a hint)?

Clocks By Roger has them for around $20 ......that's where I got mine.
I wonder which one he is selling, was there any numbering on yours ?
He also talks about the GM ones reading high where most others on the market are doing the opposite , reading too low.
Have you confirmed your temp with a gun ?

When I got mine (it's over 5 years old), it was to replace my original which accidentally got broken off. So, I was able to compare it's gauge reading which matches very closely with the original......about 95%. (approx. 170-175 degrees vs. 180 for the original). Never checked with a gun, but close enough that I'm satisfied. I got Roger's after getting one from Auto Zone that registered about 40 deg. too high.
