This has probably been discussed to death but gotta ask anyway. The aftermarket stereo in my '72 is pretty much toast. Saw where a lot of guys are going with Retro Sound for replacements. I sorta like the Retro Classic at $189. All I need is a decent am/fm stereo. No CD function and no MP3 function needed.
Other than Retro Sound, any suggestions for a decent stereo? Oh, and speakers (front dash).

Consider the kick panel location which is better. About all the dash location is good for is tweeters.

Are you running a "****" radio currently or a single DIN? I am with Ganey. Forget the dash. Put some good ones in the kick panels. mike...

Well, here's the deal. I have about 80% hearing loss in my right ear (the side of the car the wife sits on...lol) so high fidelity sound is pretty much wated on me. I'd like not to have to cut the kick panels and leave them alone. My plan is to replace the stereo, the front speakers, and maybe put another pair in the back. Mostely looking for something that will hold up and looks good and not too out of place on a '72.

Early models had speakers in the kick panels & even in 77 still had the grilles. There are some that fit behind the factory panel like 4x6 a little small, some 5.25 & probably 5x7. I disconnected the dash speakers in the 70s.

Not so much concerned about speaker location. Mostly interested in the options I have for the radio portion.

I just dumped the KHE 300 in my '70 and replaced it with RetroSound unit. HUGE difference. I'm no audiophile so I didn't want some high end sound system, just wanted to hear my music. Paid $239 + shipping. Install was pretty easy - new unit is a lot smaller than the original or the KHE 300.

I really like the look of the retro Sound when it's installed. I was on their site and found the one below for $189 + shipping. No frills stereo at a decet price. I saw that they also have speakers that will fit my front dash location for $79/pair.

That looks like a pretty good price. The only difference I can see is that mine has a USB port and a second audio in jack on the rear. When you order they will have you specify the different face, surround and ***** you want. That was a bit confusing. I ordered the chrome face, surround and ***** so I couldn't screw it up too badly. Good Luck!

check out crutchfields. if you decide to cutout the console for a din radio mount, you can get an alpine, clarion, kenwood, whatever. and it'll have enough power to hear it when you want.

The old KHE 300 sounded tinny and I kept getting intermittent failures on different channels. The Retrosound is a fuller sound and it works! Huge difference!
