No mention of a tool like that in the 1969 GM Chassis Service Manual. Wow! Eighteen bucks for a little plastic bolt and a zerk fitting. You could make one for way less than that if you have trouble filling the steering box.
Pete
lol yea Pete I was NOT considering buying it...hahah I agree kinda expensive for a fitting and a piece of plastic I was more interested in when u knew when to change it out ..would it be making a noise or is it strickly once a year type of maintaince??
Once your steering box is serviced with the appropriate lube to the proper level it should be OK for many years. I do not see a use for that tool.
I bought one years ago from Paragon, but don't remember it costing that much. My steering box was leaking out both ends so I thought I'd pump some grease in there. Big mistake. When I finally pulled the box for a rebuild, the poor guy that popped the top cover told me the grease just about exploded out of there. I confessed and he told me to throw that tool away.
The bottom seal in my 72 looks to have been leaking for decades, so I got one from one of the Corvette suppliers. It was anodized aluminum, at least. It cost about the same. I removed a second bolt while I was adding the grease.
I put it on my car and gave it 50 pumps with the wheel straight, turned left to the lock, gavie it 50 more pumps, turned it lock to lock about 5 times, then right to the lock, gave it 50 more pumps, turned it lock to lock 5 times, then re-centered the wheels and gave it a final 50 pumps.
I never saw any grease come out of the second bolt hole. I know there is a level you are supposed to fill it to.
I noticed some of the grease has started to leak out the bottom seal after about 4,000 miles. This winter it will be removed and sent to Gary Ramadei for a rebuild and blueprinting.
