Default Need Charging system shecmatic

got the 82 running and was charging fine then stopped charging. Alt testing at 14+volts , gage showing 13 and apprx 13 at the battery. I am thinking i must have an open between the alt & fuse box.
Thanks

Can't find a wiring diagram, but am reasonably certain the batt lead on the alt makes it's connection to the battery at the starter pos cable terminal. I believe you will find a couple of fusible links there, which is most likely the source of your problem.

82 should be the same as an 81, Red wire directoy from the Alt to the battery along the drivers side inside the frame back to the battery box..

If your showing 14 at the alternator , the alt is charging.
13 at the battery could mean the battery is very low (it is a big sponge), bad battery, bad connections at the battery or your not getting a good reading from your voltmeter
I believe the 82 has both wires-the usual charging wire from the alt to the starter AND the one that goes direct from the alt to the battery.

I will run a wire and bypass the oem wire to and see if that cures my problem. I assume if it were chafing i would have a short i am thinking break in the wire.
When i bought the car the guy gave me all his receipts for work. So far every problem i have had was addressed by a local mechanic at one time. I am thinking he aint much of a mechanic if i can figure it out, he must have money cause he sure put the screws to the previous owner.

You can't have 14 at the alt and 13 at the battery if they're connected together (low battery theorey). Clipping the test wire on the alt batt post instead of the batt would be akin to using a longer wire lead on your voltmeter. Has to be an open (high resistance) circuit between battery and alt.

True so that even narrows the location of the open further down, must be open before the split in the wire where one goes to the starter and the other to the battery. Now to find that junction point.

I don't have an 82 here to confirm but if I remember right that junction point is the large pos terminal on the back of the alt ,both wires bolt up there. That's what's making it difficult for me to understand the OPEN theory.

edit - how does the connection look where the neg battery cable bolts to the frame ?

As i recall there is 1 wire off the ALt which then splits off to the hood light and into a conduit i assume going to the bulkhead then.

Good ? where is it i am a newbie

Need to find a wiring diagram. I can't remember a (factory) side terminal positive batt cable having a smaller (10-12 ga) wire in the terminal or any gm with two wires on the alt pos terminal. I know that in 69 the 10 ga wire from the alt went to the horn relay. Don't recall if the splice was along the length of the wire or in the terminal at the relay end. You might want to check there.

Found it to be an intermittent connection in the alt, if smack the crap out of it it works ...... Quality part from duralast.

Thanks for all the replies.

Now the next project passenger side door handle does not move far enough to disengage the door latch.
