Default Chrome Exhaust tips

Hey Guys,

Yes, I like chrome. It looks great and I love the shine.

I thought it would look great to install some aftermarket chrome exhaust tips on my corvette during the winter. But I really don't know much about them. Could you give me some info on them.

For example, will the heat cause them to discolor (get that rainbow color effect)?
Are there cheap exhaust tips that I should stay away from? (I found this site that has many to choose from: http://www.myhotcorvette.com/Exhaust.../Exhaust-Tips/)
How do they go on (do you weld them on or are they like covers for the existing exhaust tips.

Again, I know nothing about this topic so please be as detailed as you can.

Thanks.

Stainless will not rainbow. Chrome will eventually change color with heating. Just choose a highly polished stainless tip for ease of care and cleaning. You can polish stainless forever. Polishing chrome removes the chrome and you will eventually have a poor looking piece.

They are far enough away from the initial heat source to be fine. I have never had tips yellow from heat. Use a good cream chrome cleaner and nothing abrasive and the chrome will outlast your pipes. I don't have mufflers and have 18 inch straight slash cut chrome tips on mine that shoot straight out the back about 2 inches past the bumper and they look great. Mine are welded on since I have a custom exhaust, but there are many that use screws ...

Also, do the tips have any effect of the exhaust sound?

I use stainless and prefer that look for the tips over chrome. Easy to take care of as well.

I have always purchased the chrome at the local auto store's. Never had a problem. These are turned upside down. Just like the look of them that way.

An regular tip has no effect on sound. The ricers have those funky zoom box tips that give them that souped up lawnmower sound...

I had 4 stainless steel rolled tips put on my Borla's. Extend about 2" or more from bottom. Look good. Get complements. Been on for about 10 years and still shiny. Welded on. Was not cheap, but with lifetime Borla's and stainless tips, that part of the car will last longer than me.

I like this corvette a lot. The color looks great too.

And I agree with your choice to turn them upside down. With the way the vette slats in the back, I think them upside down works.

It also causes the exhaust to go more towards the paint instead of away from it. Is that what you want?

They are curved & cut that way for a reason.

No, I have no intentions of doing this on mine. I was just commenting on the looks of it.

But honestly, can they make that big of a difference? They seem to stick out far enough to not be blowing directly on the paint and when he is driving, the speed should help keep the exhaust from blowing directly on the car. For augmentative purposes, how much time do you really spend at idle when driving? (not considering traffic jams)

Just curious, why do people block out their license tag numbers? Your tag number is visible to all as you drive down the road?

Prior to me buying this vette, the rear bumper paint was already discolored from the exhaust, and that was with them down! I have seen this a couple times. Having them face forward or down it's a 50/50 gamble.

Thanks Stingray!

As for the Lic. being blocked. Just a precaution. This isn't even my house. It's the PO, I brought it over to show him the upgrades to it.

Ya, I have always wondered that. The only think I can think of is that typically people don't take pictures of cars as they drive down the road. So to prevent "illegal use" being tied to your car, you block out the pictures.

Here's some pics of my (ricer) stainless mufflers with duel tips (Feebay bargain $49 each).
No discoloration on the tips. These are actually further from the body work than the previous tips and there are no probs with that either. They're also mounted upside down (opposite to the way ricers would mount'em) PLUS, They sound awesome.
Cheers,
Gav

I have to admit, I never thought about making my vette have lambo doors.
Do you have an LED light in your side fender vent?

What year is your Vette? Just put these on my 70 with a 2 1/2" exhaust system.

It's pointless, really.
