When I bought my '72 several weeks ago the seller told me the dash lights didn't work (he gave me a bag of bulbs). I took it out after dark fro the first time this morning and sure enough, no dash lights when I turned on the headlights. For s&g's I twisted the headlight **** dimmer and the dash lights came on only very dim, they would go out again if I twisted them back to bright. My guess is I have a defective headlight switch or at least one that needs to be cleaned. Am I right or is there another possible solution.
Headlight switch is a good candidate to start with. Also I have never taken one of these things apart that didn't need at least 2 or 3 bulbs replaced. Start with the bulbs, then do the switch
Hi m,
I believe there's a rheostat in the light switch which controls the gauge light brightness. I'd think that's your problem.

Alan
and there is a rheostat for sure as part of the switch. probably deteriorated and worn out. could just be dirty, but i would guess it is in need of replacement.
