Seems like the best choice is to get the Z (it does sound like a great price) and get the wife the car she wants. You will have a dependable driver and she will be happy. Win/win. Then think about the Corvette you both can enjoy as a toy rather than something to depend on.
I'm sure you think right now that the '77 and the '81 are the last 2 Corvettes in the world. They aren't. Entry level year/price C3s are not hard to find. When you are settled with a daily driver and the wife's car you can take your time and pick out the right C3.
Speaking of which, I don't know that I understand your preference. You referred to the 81 as "exactly" what you want, but also said you prefer the '77 styling. Is the '81 exact because its black? You should have no problems finding a black '77 when the time comes if thats what you really want. I guess I might have said that wrong...I like both styles...flat back, and bubble back...I like the extra space in the Bubble...plus it doesn't "seem" as cramped when your inside...but I love the Flat back styling...If I was to get EXACTLY what I wanted...It would be a Black Chrome Bumper...but thats not what I am in the market for right now $$$$
Just dont settle. It is better to wait, wait, wait than buy a Corvette that "was OK." Ill never make that mistake again.
don't listen to anybody.........You know deep down inside what you really want to do stop procrastinating....
Hope your feeling much better

Oh Frank...Yes we all know I want to leave right now...go pick up the vette...take the t tops off and just enjoy life.
After reading the posts, and your replies, I would rule out the 350Z.
While it may be a great daily driver, neither one of you want it. Your wife wants a Beetle, and you want a vette. Buying the 350Z will not meet either one of your dream cars.
I agree with one of the other suggestions. Buy your wife the Beetle first, then you can go out and get your vette. My reasons for this is you have some negotiation position. After all, she has HER car that she wants, and the vette would be less than the price of her car. Pretty good place to validate buying the vette.

then when your ready do just that.....
take it from me a "leukemia survivor"
I also wanted an old vette more then anybody....... i drive a POS to work now however i do own a stingray.........get well then go get it........
Peace

Heck, buy her what she wants NOW since you really aren't in any shape to really drive a vette yet anyway and while you are healing keep looking and when you are ready buy what you really want if both things are within your budget parameters. You're gonna live a long time and it sounds like the wife is a keeper so keeper happy first and you'll be happier over time. Spoken from a guy who was married for 42 years and lost a wife to disease. No other woman candidate since has been anywhere near her character, appearance, intelligence...they haven't yet passed the tests including current girlfriend, curly hair and nice headlights, degrees, income and all! A good wife is worth spoiling and nurturing. It will pay off for you in the end. Don't settle for something you really don't want. Take your time...you have plenty of time before you can really use a Vette anyway.
Glad you are feeling well enough to debate all this stuff by the way. big congrats to you.
bought 350z parts lately? worked on a z lately? I have... buy the vet
You mind pm'ing me some of your 350 Z experiences? What typically goes wrong, cost on parts n labor etc...
Is it a fun car? I have driven one...but not to any extent
Now, to commit absolute heresy...why think only of a Vette and a C3? I have seen some of the new Mustang 5.0 liter V-8's that go from 412 horsepower and approx. same torque on up from there with very modern stuff on them. I'd think they would just plain scream.
I'd probably look for a C5 myself if I didn't own the current C3 to get more power and modern engineering but don't overlook some of the newer Ford Engines. They haven't been asleep and some of it has been in collaboration with Roush racing and Nascar. Don't rule 'em out. Having said that, I'm taking my 76 to watch the autocross of a car club at RIR in Richmond tomorrow morning and can't imagine not owning my little RoJo, 1976 Vette.
The 81' gets my vote, that extra space in the back makes life so much easier. Plus you'll be glad that you got some extra horsepower on it because stock late model c3s weren't really know for their performance.
The new stangs are nice...as are the other new Muscle/Pony cars out. I also like C5's. I just like C3's more. Plus I don't like the pricetags ....nor do I like car payments.

For a DD I want something reliable, not sure if any off those really fit. I love my Vette but I would not want to DD it. If that's the only 3 options I would go with the Nissan.
Hmm, after a million talks with my better half....
We still really haven't decided on anything...except that we should buy the Nissan no matter what. Then if we find the car she is looking for at a decent price(Black Beetle Convertible) we get that one...and I hang on to the Z for a while. If I can find a car that I am looking for(the black 81) for a decent(lower) price then I can get that...and she will drive the Z
I have no problem driving the Z....But heres hoping that there will be a Corvette back in my Garage in the near future....
