I took out the screw that is in the middle of the wiring harness on the driver side engine compartment. I think that is the only thing holding the harness in. I started to pull on it but it didn't move. Don't want to pull too hard without making sure that is the only thing holding it in. Should just come out of the back of the fuse panel, right?
Hi Scott,
Yes, just one bolt, but a tremendous amount of thick, sticky, black sealer on my 71. Have you 'loosened' the sealer free from the connection?
Regards,
Alan
does the entire piece with the engine and forward harness come out as a group or one at a time? I have enot loosened up the sealer yet except around the corners of the entire piece.
Scott
That junction block actually consists of two plugs. One is the engine wiring harness, the other is the forward lamp harness. After unscrewing the bolt, you will need to ply both plugs back at the same time. I believe one plug contains the mount for the other plug, which slides in from the side. The inside of that junction is filled with some goopy dielectic grease. Just make sure you break the seal around the entire perimeter before trying to separate.

Got it out with no problem. Just didn't want to start pulling without knowing what was supposed to happen.
The entire plug (consisting of both harnesses) comes out as one. The engine wiring harness has two small sections that come over the top of the forward harness. The forward harness is the piece where the bolt goes through.
Now I have to decide if I want to replace both harnesses or just the engine. I'd like too since it is out but for another 200 I have to think about it.
You are following in my footsteps Scott. I replaced the engine harness when I first got the car. That solved the battery drain problem. Then I replaced the forward lamp harness when I restored the front half of the car...sort of a while I'm at it. The fiber optic pigtail back into the cabin is a real PITA to route under the dash. Old wiring is nothing but one problem after another. Sooner or later it all has to be replaced. Money well spent if you ask me.
Hi Scott,
I found the engine haness to be in much worse condition than the forward lamp harness on my car.
I think the engine harness deteriorates because it runs behind the engine and down to the starter 2 places where there is a lot of heat and oil mist.
So, if you check out the lighting harness well you might not need to replace it. I ended just taking the old wrap off and putting new wrap on.
Regards,
Alan
