I have a '05 Mustang that I am selling and will be using those funds (or some of them) to purchase my first Corvette. This of course has to be a C3 because - well it just has to be a C3
I have been considering offering my car as a trade (even up or a C3 plus $$) if I could find one that fits my needs. I'm not able to trade my car plus $$ at this point. Would I get laughed off the "for sale" section if I attempted this? There is so much knowledge of these cars here, that I thought you all might have some thoughts to share. My Mustang is worth aprx 11,000 give or take (I'm not unrealistic about it's value), so I could get a decent C3 for that I hope?? I wouldn't expect a completely restored car in trade (that's not realistic I know), but it would have to be solid with no major issues (NO RUST) and have AC that did not need big $$ to get it working correctly.
I really like the 77's for a few reasons, but would be open to a 75 - 80 if it was the right deal. Location would make a difference as well - I'm not able to travel long distances to check out cars in person. Finding one in AZ would be perfect for me.
I'm fairly thick skinned, but please be gentle with me
Wanted to clarify since I was sort of "wandering" with my thoughts there. I know it would take someone looking for a daily driver car to replace a C3 - the old "there is a butt for every seat" saying comes to mind. I guess what I'm wondering more then anything is this - since this is a Corvette only forums I don't want to put up something that would just be ridiculed by the members here. Hope that makes sense?
No, it's a V6 car with a fair amount of extras done to it including all the GT bodywork. Don't want to turn this into a classified ad here but it's a 1 owner car and is a very clean car.
You can post a for sale / trade with your 05 Mustang, the worst that can happen is there will be no takers.
If you want to buy a 75 to 80 C3 and have in the neighborhood of 11 grand to spend, it should be possible.
They were not exactly the high water mark for Corvette performance and plenty were produced.
I think if it was a V8 manual trans you would have no problem doing it. you can still try though, you never know.
I would put it up for trade on craigslist as well. You might find some one who has one that isn't as much of an enthusiast as we all are, and might like the idea of having a newer more efficient car then a C3.

There are some who don't want a V8 daily driver - insurance, gas etc. But I see your point as well.
Not had much luck with CL unless it's a table or TV etc. Cheaper items seem to sell well on there.
Hi A M,
My thought about a trade is that you MIGHT end up taking a car you're not completly sold on because the DEAL works.
I'd be afraid my existing car would be gone, but I wouldn't have the Corvette I really wanted.
With a trade you're not really shopping for a car, you're shopping for a transaction.
Regards,
Alan

Very good point Alan. I had not thought of it that way
Also there are big cosmetic differences in that '75 to '80 year range...
Biggest being "Flat Back" vs "Bubble" rear window....
Be sure you know what year you want....other major changes as well...
(My first Vette was a '77.....loved that car !)
I am a bigger fan of the '77 body style, but I also like some of the interior features of the '79 - '80 cars such as the seats and other interior items which seem to be a bit more refined.
There probably IS a Corvette in AZ that would be just what you're looking for. Whether they'd trade for your 'Stang is another matter entirely. The best bet is to turn your pony into cash and get what you want, don't settle for whats convienent./:\
It is possible to trade but going to be hard. If the car is worth what you are saying then your best bet would be selling it outright and then you can pick and choose on the corvette. Just remember, you are going from a relatively new maintenance free vehicle to something that is 30+ years old and it will be quite a change. If it is going to be a DD investigate more to make sure that you will be happy using it as that. If it isn't then go for it.
You can find a good car that won't need much in that price range. No need to consider buying a car at large. Since you aren't looking for something too specific you should find plenty close to you to choose from.
Getting the cash for your car is the hardest part. Finding a replacement will be relatively painless.
I do have the car for sale on CL and on cars.com. If I get a bite there and sell it that works as well. My thought about trying the trade here is that I may open up other options that I would not have somewhere else. There are many more Corvette "connections" here and some really good people that have been very helpful with helping me learn about C3 cars
Milo - It won't be a DD, but will be driven on a very regular basis since the weather here permits it. If it's going to be bad weather, I'll drive my current DD instead.
I just listed it, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully I don't get to many Hate PM's
p.s. THANK YOU all for your advice and for sharing your knowledge of these cars. Awesome stuff!
Winter coming ... Some get married & 9 mos. later are looking for a car w/ a backseat...imagine that.
I did not see you had already done your listing before posting. You could add the mpg.
