Default Help finding original Paint

Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to paint my engine. Now the idea is to paint it with the exact red that the original car had in 1973 which is my car's original color.

Is there a place that is listed here in the forum that who sells the correct paints for classic vettes

The paint color number is: 976

Thanks

Here are the original codes for arcylic lacquer. Your problem is almost no one is making acrylic lacquer these days and it is against the law in some locations to spray it.

Your paint dealer might be able to use these codes to find a reasonable match to your 73 red. His paint will almost certainly not be acrylic lacquer.

You could try Google and see if your turn up acrylic lacquer.

Good luck.

so you want to paint your engine the same color as your car's body was originally painted?

is it the color you want and not the exact paint? I don't think the lacquer will hold up in that engine heat? Why don't you use chevy orange, the color that the engine was originally?

Hi cp,
I agree that while you can still find acrylic lacquer, (PPG is one of the manufacturers), I wonder how it will hold up on the intake cross-over and on the heads near the exhaust ports which are parts of the engine that develop a lot of heat.
I do see street rods that have the engine block painted the same color as the body, but I'm betting special paint is being mixed for those engines.
To my eye Chevy orange is a look that's hard to beat! Why not Chevy orange on your 73?
Regards,
Alan

hey guys,

It's the color that is most important to me... I want to find a good paint that can be used for the body of the car and at the same time resistant to the heat in the engine bay.

I don't really care if it's acryic lacquer etc. Just want the car and the engine to look look perfect and stay perfect for many years in the future.

you are still being vague... what color do you want your body, and what color do you want your engine, and what color do you want your engine bay? You say you want to paint your engine, then you want to find paint for the body of the car???? we are 6 posts into your thread and don't know what you are asking?

just trying to clarify what you are asking?

976 was Mille Miglia Red in 1973, I think the OP wants to paint his engine and car that specific colour.

Yes, that's what I want to do. The engine bay is gonna be black just like any other vette. I just want the Engine Block have the same Mille Miglia Red.

Thanks

I did a Google search and found a paint company that would sell me spray cans of the paint color code I wanted. This was probably three or four years ago, so I wouldn't have website address. As I recall it was pretty painless search process. If I recall correctly, they actually sold me lacquer spray paints. Lacquer is a big no-no in the soviet socialist republic of california.

Make sure all parts of the engine are spotlessly clean to start.

Use DP epoxy primer and Concept base coat in your red color.

Finish with DBU2021 clear. Done
