I have looked at a 1970 convertible in my searchfor a car, one thing I noticed is that the vehicle number in the windscreen pillar seems to have a LOT of corrosion around the plate. The rest of the car seems to be solid. Is this a localised common rust problem with roadsters in that area of the car, or is likely to be more extensive in the bird cage.
Hi Roger,
WELCOME!
There are many cars that have rust around the windshield frame because the windshield seals often leaked. On some cars it's VERY serious.
Many times the rust you can see is a small fraction of what's there. Not always, but often.
What you're seeing isn't necessarily a dealer breaker, but definitely a reason to look at the car in a very informed and careful way.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
If you have pics that may help us. My 72 had a bit of surface rust around the VIN Tag and when I had my windshield replaced, there was some minor rust damage, but nothing that couldn't be fixed rather easily. But like some have said, it is something that should cause you to look a bit more closer (i.e. behind the kickplates). You may also want to look inside the door jambs to see if there is a significant amount of rust that has run down.
