Carb too small, your quadrajunk is a 650CFM.
And those Holleys are not the best type anyways.
I would piece together what you need
Like a 750 Holley vacuum secondary and that intake.
You will need a throttle bracket so you can use your whole throttle from idle to wide open, they don't cost much at all.

The stock qjet is 750 CFM. The proposed set up would gain nothing and possibly lose some HP by having to junk the cold air intake.

So should he go with a 750 or something bigger? Should he also go with a different intake?

a intake and carb change might not even be noticeable. Then you won't be able to close the hood, yada yada yada.

Good flowing aluminum heads and cam will perk it up much better.

Bottom line you can't force the engine to take more than it wants by bolting on a bigger carb. Does that make sense?

Have him start out with a 260 or 268 CompCam, lifters, timing chain and spring kit. I he doesn't want to go that route, I would suggest a good tuneup and call it good.

Nothing wrong with a quadrajet when set up correctly. Try a weiand stealth intake. If you have to have a different carb, keep it under 650 cfm. Watch the carb height when closing the stock small block hood.

generally speaking, too little cfm = good low rpm range, and sacrifice high rpm/power
too large CFM = higher rpm, and sacrifice low rpm/power

i just replaced the carb on my 78 with the jet performance stage 2 750 cfm carb from summit. the part number there i believe is 35002. it is an exact replacement with reworked innards. made a big difference. the only thing different is that the replacement carb has an electric choke as opposed to the heat rise type choke. the carb is a direct bolt up to the existing manifold. if you wish to change manifolds, why not just consider an aluminum L82 stock type with the carb replacement

Get a good rebuild on the carb you have and spend the $ on dual exhaust and see where you get from there. Want a little more, now think about cam and head upgrades.
