When I took the rear differential out I noticed the side yokes move about 1/16". Is this OK? I am going to change the rear seals but didn't want to put the rear end back in without doing the yokes if the 1/16' is too much.
rodney mine move around the same but don't pull out so the retaining clips are still in place.i have no issues whatsoever but i do not race the car so it may depend on how you drive it.you will hear all kinds of opinions on this topic and sometimes it will get ugly. good luck.
I thought my 70 was moving in and out in excess of 1/8". I picked up a dial indicator and found they were only moving .019 which is within spec. I thought the worst until I looked a bot closer.
Keep in mind that somewhere around 1974 the yokes were not properly hardened on the ends so they will wear out much faster. I remember reading another post that indicated there was a recall back in the day.
Don't guess and try to make as scientific evaluation as you can.
You can pick up a cheap dial indicator and magnetic base from harbor freight that will do the job.
