I was out working on the timing today and switched over to full manifold vacuum on my '78 L-48 4 speed car. I got everything switched over and went out for a test drive... On a lonely straight on the way back to the house I decided to flog it a little and this happened:
Clearly the driver's side tail pipe has been rusting for a while and I knew this but was hoping to stretch it into next year before replacing it. The passenger side came apart because it looks like some bubba put the u-bolt in the wrong spot and/or didn't tighten it enough. I guess bubba just helped motivate me to get a true dual setup and get rid of the turkey fryer cat!
52 degrees at idle with vac. advance hooked up? Did it backfire when you let off the gas? Mine is at 14 degrees initial plus 10 degrees with the vac. advance = 24 degrees at idle. mike...
No, you're right. I had the numbers mixed up in my head. 52 total when the mechanical is all in which is about 3600 with the Mr Gasket weights I'm running until I get the new bushings for the original weights......

Yeah, the Mr. Gasket springs are great, but take the weights that come with the kit and just throw them away. Or maybe make a pair of earrings out of them, or something. I used the medium springs in my '80, the timing comes all in at about 2800 rpm, nice.
