Looks like USAA is going to come thru on this. Their Reps quote is "we're gonna find some part of some policy to cover this under" Since my dad's fire caused the bldg to burn down, thereby destroying my car, they are leaning toward tapping his liability instead of either his homeowners or personal property -- which will leave him more $$$$$ room for his content claim.
Now i guess i'm onto getting them to value 15 yrs of modification, restoration, and upgrades to hope to breakeven !!!!!!!!

It would be liability. Contents only covers his stuff. Damage to anyone else stuff is liability. In a sense you are kind of lucky because book values used by an auto insurance company do not apply. They have to pay out what you can prove its worth.
LOL......no such thing!
But I'm glad you'll get something out of it!
Do you plan another restro or a completed car or ????
A V8 Vega ? (JK!)
WELL - BEven only if all my labor is free.....blood/sweat/tears are cheap!
thank god almost all the stuff i used is still available from Summit, Eklers, and CCentral -- just drop all the parts into my "cart" and printout the invoice.
i'm thinking USAA will have to use NADA since they're the only book going back that far (1981), with my extensive, pre-storage picture file i think i can get them between good and excellent value

You're right, if an "act of god" destroyed the bldg, i'd be screwed. Honestly both my dad and i BOTH thought it was covered as an unregistered/stored item under his homeowners/farm policy.........NOW I know better !
Sorry to hear of your predicament. I'm just wondering with the year of your car, if you ever thought of having collector insurance on it (maybe you did - if so I apologize). Up north, I have a policy with Silver Wheels through a company just outside Toronto. I'm allowed 10,000 miles of usage per calendar year - which is more than I'll ever drive in a summer. My only stipulation is that I have the car professionally appraised every 5 years (approx $150), and then that is what my payout will be in the event of an accident. I run historic plates which cost me only $18 a year for the annual sticker; and my insurance premium comes in at $168 annually for an appraised value of $16,500.

Siver wheels is not always the best deal. Any insurance company will give out antique coverage if a vehicle is over 25 years old. I have mine insured for a similar value to yours through a regular market. I pay a bit more but can drive anywhere anytime.

You are absolutely correct, there has to be liability, someone to blame. If it was lightning for example you would be SOL.

THIS IS A HUGE POINT FOR ANYONE THAT DOESN'T KNOW.
I used to think the same thing, but I heard about a friend of a friend had a jeep restoration over 90% complete and his garage burned down. No insurance on the jeep, and home owner's insurance does not cover stored vehicles. He got nothing for the destroyed almost completely restored CJ. You need a comprehensive policy on a vehicle being stored. Protects against theft, vandalizm, and damage, and it costs just a few bux a month for the vehicles I've checked into it for.
Comprehensive is super cheap. I just put comprehensive on my '78 through State Farm. Agent say that will be $36.00. I said per month? She say's no, every 6 months. For what it covers, it is well worth it.
Thanks to fast81 for the update because this is becoming a most informative thread.
Later this year I'll have a completed rolling chassis for my '80 sitting in a single car garage. Because I had to replace the frame and am going to a crate engine and 5-speed, when the chassis is finished, I'll have invested close to $20G. Looks like I should get serious about some insurance on that thing.
