Default 1970 Radio Upgrade

I'm in the process of upgrading the radio in my 70 and have already purchased the single DIN center console. I am going for a unit with USB/IPOD on the front and a few other goodies... HDR. Has anybody installed a radio in a 70 with a DVD screen/player? Since the radio sits at a slanted back angle, my concern is that the motorized DVD units will try to pop the screen out to a vertical position and cause it to hit the gage bezel. This is a "fun" project... it doesn't have to make sense. It just has to keep me out of trouble. Anybody put a DIN 1 DVD unit in their 70?

When I first saw those units, I thought that would be a idea, too. Then, after sleeping on the idea...and thinking about what that DVD screen could actually DO for me...I gave up on it.

Wouldn't the screen also cover part of your instruments? That just seemed like a butt load of problems with so little space to work in so I installed a RetroSound unit.

It would cover some of the gauges with the screen up. I have seen a few pics on the forum with these units installed and the DVD screens up.
What ever you do, DO NOT cut & modify the original gauge cluster bezel.

Do a search and some pics or threads may come up. Here's one.

You are absolutely right. I don't need it.

Yes.. when it's up, it would be in front of the gauges. But when it's up, I would probably be parked someplace watching a movie... or making one. LOL Actually, I was thinking in terms of a rear mounted camera.

I already have a replacement radio & amp in it. The original is boxed, sealed, and labeled for the next owner.

I bought the center console from Mid America and put my original away.
I did a search... but didn't get anything. I'll keep looking. Maybe I can figure out what the search terms need to be. So far, nada.

Thanks

I installed this Kenwood that plays video, displays pics, has USB and iPod connections, HD radio, and bluetooth. It does not have a cd/dvd player (old technology). Connections are in my glove box. Got it from Crutchfield.

I have a flip up screen in my truck. The first time it comes up you can adjust how vertical you want the screen to go. It will then go into memory and open to that adjustment every time.

Lots of selection, which is always nice. Question I have is what is a ballpark price for the headunits, also, the added costs for your peripheral "goodies" like GPS transponders and backup cameras.

I'm sorry but I've never heard of this particular manufacturer. How do they rate against the more known namebrands like Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, etc..

I have no idea who they are or what quality their equipment is. It's just a starting point.... the big players don't seem to be very interested in DIN1.

Yes... the photo's are no longer valid links or too dark to see. Thanks anyways.

What do you want to see Tom? A video during the opening of the screen? Some pictures during daylight? Picture from the side without the center console extention? I could snap some more on monday if you'd like?

My concern is the way the screen would sit relative to the center gauge bezel and the shifter. I have a 4 spd and when the car is parked, the shifter is in reverse... forward position... same as 1st & 3rd. I just don't want to buy a unit that hits things when it is up. Basically... it's an interference concern. Thanks.

Hello Tom,
I don't think you'll have issues with the shifter due to the slant angle of the radio/bezel.
Bad phone pictures, it's the best I could do

Thanks for taking the time to take more pictures.... that clears it up and I do like the way it looks. So now I just have to identify one that serves my lust for bling. LOL I really appreciate you taking the time to snap the pics & post them.

They do make one that has Navigation. I have the Nav one in my truck. It also has XM and IPOD hookup.
