You might recall the great Bear Bryant died of a heart attack 3 months after his last game.
I don't mean to jump on a soap box, but the only thing JoePa is guilty of is trusting his superiors! JoePa was not given any specifics of what McQueery saw and brought the allegation to his superiors to investigate. JoePa testified that he felt Spanier and Curley had the resources and expertise to take action. Thanks to the media sensationalizing the story, and focus the story on the face of PSU, they applied pressure on the wrong people and made statements without all the facts. *This irresponsible journalism spawned the court of public opinion and somehow criticized JoePa, instead of the real culprits - Curley, Spanier and Sanducky. JoePa was vilified by those with 20/20 hindsight and how they would have handled it. JoePa was unfairly treated in the end. The board of trustees fired him to get the media off campus and turn the page. *Until proven otherwise in a court of law, people should stop acting like guest stars on Jerry Springer and let the legal process prove otherwise. My son attends PSU and one of his reasons to go there was JoePa. We were all blind-sided by this and no one condones what scumdusky is alleged of, but place your anger where it is deserved - on the executives that did nothing but lie under oath, and of course the perpetrator. While there are countless numbers of boys that are the victims in this mess, JoePa became a victim because of knee jerk reactions and is now dead because of a broken heart. What a frigging shame!
Don't get me wrong i had the up most respect for Joe and the way he coached football....the simple uniforms nothing flashy just get the job done, but having said that i just wonder having Joe knowing what he did and his superiors not doing anything about it you can wonder why he did not just go to the police on his own. the sad thing about all of this we as the public will never know really what happen....Rest in Peace Joe
I have been an Alabama fan since I can remember. Years ago, I was a member of the PGA Professional Golfers Assoc. I met and played with many great golfers and athletes over the years, however one of my greatest times in sports was when I saw The Bear and Joe Paterno talking with each under the goal post before an Alabama, Penn State game. One of the truely great names of college football and he had to go down like he did. Judged guility before a true investigation could begin. I hope with time, he will be see as the person everyone knew he was.
Paterno put football ahead of the welfare of children. After getting caught in 1998, Paterno forced Sundusky to retire. When Sandusky was caught again in 2003, notifying school officials was not enough. He looked the other way to protect the image of his team. The result? Sundusky abused children for another 10 years. Sad that his legacy is forever tanished. But Paterno had no one to blame but himself.
Wouldn't it be awesome if there was an Off Topic Section on this site for discussions that have absolutely nothing to do with Corvettes, let alone C3 Corvettes?

I'm no doctor, nor can speak on how long anyone can live with lung cancer, but when I heard yesterday morning that he had passed, I immediately thought the same thing...died of a broken heart.
Just to keep this thread on track, I drove my '69 onto campus and parked behind the Ag Sciences building 3 days a week during my senior year in the fall of '81.
The thing about Joe I will always remember is that he instilled 'class' in his players. When exuberant celebrations like the Ickey Shuffle were the norm, Joe had his players pitch the football to the ref after the end of a play not drop it to the ground for the ref to fetch.
