I have an 82 and just replaced all the dash cluster bulbs (most were burnt out) and now the "low fuel" light is on but the gauge shows a little over half a tank. So either the gauge is wrong or whatever senses the low fuel is bad. But my question is where does it gets its signal from? Or what should I look for??
I really don't know how full the tank is and can't drive it yet to go fill it up.
If you are going to work on your car, you also need a copy of the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for 1979. If you plan to purchase the 'low fuel warning' module, buy the AIM at the same time. Then you can actually see what is supposed to be installed in the car (and how it is installed) for yourself. Much easier....

I bought the AIM for my 82 but don't remember seeing that part??
As for how much gas you have....open the door and look!
Use something as a dipstick.
most of the time (and because they were pretty scarce for so long), people discarded them and put a burned out bulb in the socket (if they put any bulb back at all. as you can see from the above, a core charge is pretty steep because there just aren't that many of the boards floating around any more.

Yep, I could have just deleted the bulb but I like things to be factory correct so I bit the bullet and bought one. And had to pay the steep core charge as well.
Yikes$$$$
It's POSSIBLE to install it without removing the gauge cluster.
Take out the glovebox, 6 screws.
Carefully reach over from there.
Just don't drop it!
Or, if you do remove the gauge cluster again, look around under or behind the radio. It may have fallen out and be laying there.

I already have the cluster out, changed out all the lights to LED. Man what a difference in brightness. Plus installing a CD player. I will look around again though. That would be nice to have to not pay the core charge.
That is what that board goes to! I was putting mine back together and saw it but couldn't remember where it goes. Hopefully I can get to it from the glove box opening to put it back in.
Everyone keeps saying check AIM for everything but I got to tell you, I have a heck of a time trying to find what I am looking for in there. I found a page with the center gauge cluster but nothing that showed that part or the cluster expanded. I hate even pulling out the AIMS
Brand new Low Fuel Warning Modules with light bulb included are available on Ebay right now. Just search for corvette low fuel warning module. For 77-82 Vettes. They are $29.95. Only modules being sold out there!
It said 5 available and 5 sold--anymore?? I sent him a note asking but have not heard back.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only challenged owner out there. Some times the AIM is difficult for me. Just thought it was hardening of my arteries at 59. This is a great thread, I needed the module also.
