Default Frame Dip

Anyone had experience with this? I was searching the through the past threads and didn't come up with anything that really answered my questions.
I am assuming that it is the best way to go? I only say that because i think blasting would remove good metal as well as bad and not even come close to cleaning the inside of the frame.
If you have done this, could you post what work you had done to the frame as well as the cost to have it dipped and painted... basically the cost to have it ready to go.
Thanks in advance!

Any place near you which does the dipping? If so, give them a call and let them explain the process. It is my understanding the technique is to dip the part (frame) in an acid bath which removes all gook, gunk, paint, and rust and leaves a mild etch on the steel. After the acid bath, the piece is dipped to prevent rust. You prime and paint after you get your frame back.

I had my frame dipped, and I would do it again it worked so well! In fact, after I had the frame dipped, I took all the other parts I had and had them dipped as well. This was over 10yrs ago, and the cost then to dip the frame was $250.

Cant say I know of any places doing this for the hobbiest, but worked on some pick up truck manufacturing plant paint system projects. Frames are dipped in an electrically charged tank, which plates everything inside, and out. It's thin, but tuff as nails. What you're wanting, if you can find a place to do it. Doubt its cheap though.

I have done some looking around for a place that does this. But so far no luck. Realizing that i don't paint very well myself, i need to have someone who does the whole job start to finish. I have checked with one body shop so far though and got an approx price, based on dipping and painting was around $1500. I don't know if thats good or bad. Seems like alot though considering i have to have a few repairs done as well which will be in addition.

Ya, that looks good. I think i will do the same with the parts i am keeping. I thought about buying a smaller sandblaster for those but still don't know. I suppose some sandblasting might not be so bad.

What i am looking for is more of a rust remover i think. And when it is all eaten off a sealer and paint is applied. Unfortunatly i don't think any way i go will be cheap unless i do it myself. I don't think thats an option.

Why? You could teach yourself to paint using your frame as your first subject.

Lots of How To Paint books out there.

True. I just never liked working with paint. That includes the walls in my house.. Thats my wifes comes in. But i suppose it would be ok if it were dipped and sealed so the areas i couldnt brush on would remain rust free. I don't think i would be up to building a temporary paint booth and spraying.

I didn't have the frame done but I had a lot of the smaller pieces done at Techno Strip in Brampton. They did a good job if I had to do it again I would have had the frame done too.

That Molasses stuff works. It just takes time. Takes a couple weeks to get stripped but just gets hosed off. The dry Molasses runs about $0.25 a pound. Mixes at 9 to 1.

There is a place in Cincinnati that dips. It's called American Metal Stripping I think. It;s just hard to get off the anti rust stuff they put on if there are seams it gets into. Later down the road can come out through the paint.

I had this done with my '68 frame. I think the cost was $150 a few years ago. The process is this:

1) The item is baked in an oven to remove all grease and remaining paint.

2) Then it's dipped in a mild hydrochloric acid bath. The dipping removes only the remaining rust. Anyone who tells you that it also removes any substantial amount of metal probably had more extensive rust problems than they thought.

3) The item is dipped in a neutralizing bath which also contains a rust preventative. This will come off with mild detergent and water.

I was so impressed with how my frame came out, that I have since taken fenders, doors, seat frames, nuts and bolts and fasteners (in a bucket with drain holes punched) and just about any steel part that can rust to them to have it cleaned. There's two disclaimers: don't take anything with rubber bushings, plastic clips etc. attached that you are concerned about getting damaged, and no non-ferrous parts.

I like the process because it removes rust inside and out. Sandblasting only gets the accessible areas. I made sure to use a wand and spayed rust proofing throughout the inside of my frame after painting it.

The place that does my work is called International Paint Stripping and is located in Romulus, Michigan right near the Detroit Metro airport. These guys will also e-coat your part after stripping it if you want.

The owners are car enthusiasts and the main part of their business is to reclaim sheet metal supplied to them by the Detroit 3 that have paint defects. They do work for fellow enthusiasts on the side, and they have the best prices around! I have friends that have brought them stuff from out of state because they are so reasonable. IPS will dip an entire car body for you if make arrangements with them in advance.
