Default Removing Interior 1975

Hi,

I am in the process of removing the interior from my 75 and most of it has been very easy to deal with....two exceptions.

I am having trouble with the trim piece on the center beam for the t-tops. I have removed all the bolts and there is nothing that I can see holding it in place but it will not come off. I have not tried to use much force because I would rather not break it. Is there something I am missing?

Also, the driver side lower dash is giving me some issues. How exactly do you disconnect the tach and speedo? That seems to be the only thing holding it from being removed. I've read a bit about it but can't seem to see or feel my way around.

Thanks!

The center on the T-Top panel has two pins in the center of it that hold it to the top. Carefully just pull it loose.

The drivers side dash .. the tachometer and speedometer cables are held in place by clips that you depress to release them. It is sometimes easier to lube those cables where the enter through the firewall and disconnect them from the transmission and distributor to give you a little slack.

You are working on a '75, it has electronic tach, no cable. Unscrew the speedo retaining nut, drop the steering column, then very carefully make sure everything is loose. Not the most pleasant job but it can be done at home.

I recently had the dash out of my 75. The tach should be electronic, so just pull the plug.
On my car the speedo cable was a 2-piece unit. I'll assume that all of them are like that, and if so, you can unscrew the 2 pieces (they meet just under the firewall. By doing that, you'll be able to pull the dash forward because you'll now have some slack in the cable. Of course you'll have to pull (or at least drop down) the steering column first.
Once you get the dash pulled forward, you'll see the clip to depress to release the cable from the speedo.

I am replacing my 75 interior now.
If you remove the cover at the bottom of the steering column, get the headlight bypass out of the way and remove the air duct piece, it is easy to release the speedometer cable.
Just push the tab and the cable will loosen. Then drop your steering column. On the back of your tach/speedometer cluster the bulb sockets are marked as to what color wire goes where. Hope this helps.

You do the C3 flip.

Slide the seat all the way back (or remove it), flip over on your back, wiggle your head and shoulders up under the dash, and, if you've been living right and are holding your tongue in exactly the right spot, you can reach up and unplug the speedo cable.

It's dark up there. You will want a flashlight.

If your tongue is not right or if you've been sinning, this maneuver will not work.

An 'alternative' approach is to remove the 4 retaining bolts from the seat tracks and remove the seat. Much easier to do dash work with the seat out. And, you can vacuum the junk under and around the seat!

Option 3 is to get your 8-10 year old grandson to do the job for you.

I think I can get the tongue right but the sinning....I might be in trouble a bit there....

Join the club. Driver's side dash is probably where the C3 flip originated.

Funny...did a search on how to remove my speedo and found this thread.

I have become VERY accustomed to the 'C3 Flip' in replacing the tach cable on my 1970. My wonderful wife was instrumental in getting the old one removed and the new one replaced.

My speedo is bouncing ALL OVER THE PLACE. I have every suspicion the cable is toast. I was completely under the car (changing the oil) for the first time this past Friday and the connection to the transmission was very jiggly-wiggly. Technical term. Unfortunately, the previous owner didn't fix whatever is wrong (or disconnect the cable) quick enough and the needle broke off.

When doing the tach, I tried to remove the instrument panel, but was unsuccessful. I pulled all the screws around the door, the top, the bottom, and on the radio side. Also removed the light bypass from the column. It seemed to WANT to come out, but didn't. I had fear of the unknown and just screwed everything back together.

MY QUESTION: Does the two-instrument vinyl 'chunk' pop out? Or is it tied to something else in the dash? Or can I replace the speedometer from the back-side? Has anyone replaced just the speedo? Is there an easy way to do this?

If the OP has gotten his instrument cluster out yet, perhaps you can enlighten me...

Thanks, crew.

bump,

on the 75 is the speedo cable a one piece or two piece on the 4 speed manual? I have found both types advertised.

Thanks
