Two quick questions for you concerning the info on the link. I have a 3.70 and want to go to a 3.08. What is the difference in an AT and an AW, if any? When I look at ring and pinion sets from Corvette venders as well as Summit I see no mention of heavy duty. Are the ring and pinion the same on either (AV vs. AT and AW) or does the heavy duty refer to case and other components? Thanks

3.08 and 3.70 use the same 3 series carrier. HD means nothing.

I'm having a little trouble understanding the original post. You bought a diff. You don't know what year it is? (it's a 78, not 68). You are looking for a place to buy the cheapest parts. You are planning on rebuilding it and sell it to someone here on the forum?

Yes, on the bottom rail just in front of the rear cover. The codes tell you what it was originally was, not what it is now.
