For those that have replaced their original 74 split bumper (just about anyone who owns a 74), can I get some input on what you consider the best replacement? I have a fiberglass look alike, but I am wondering if a two piece would be better. Is a Tru-flex better than a regular fiberglass replacement. How about fit and finish?
I have a Trueflex 1 piece rear. A little bit of fitting, but way less than the front. The split isn't really deep enough to look authentic. With hindsight, a 2 piece would have achieved the 74 split rear more effectively
Don't if there's any truth to this but I heard Ecklers bought the molds from GM for the 74 true split rear bumper. The flex is the way to go because the bumper will move a certain amount to match up with the body. So no sanding to make it fit. Some people use the gas cap cover for a color match. That didn't work well for me, but it's a thought. I'm thinking Ecklers is the only ones who make a true split, but I could be wrong.
Looking at the Ecklers site, it looks like they sell the original urethane bumper ($$$). Would it be better to replace my cracked urethane bumper with a flex-fit. What would the benefits/drawbacks be?
I do see there is difference in price by about double to go to the urethane.
I'm not seeing a urethane split bumper on Ecklers site. Maybe a none split urethane, but I didn't look at other years besides 74. I personally would buy the flex fit because it will always look as good as the rest of the car. Bumper won't get wavy and color match will be exact match to the rest of the car. And of course you won't have to replace it again for thirty years or more. Now if your an NCRS kind of guy and a split urethane actually exists, go for it. I went with the Flex front and rear and the bumpers look fantastic. Of course if you plan on hitting something they would flex less then urethane. The flex would give some, compared to fiberglass, but not much.
