Default What is this?

Does anybody know what this part is that I'm holding in my hand. Its a short cyl with a electrical connection. It also has a mount but its not mounted to anything and I can't find anyplace where it can mount to. It has a couple of hoses coming out of one end. I don't see it in any drawings from the service manual that I have.

Thanks
Dan

I have an 81 but dont have that part. I believe its a spark controlling solenoid that meters the amount of advance that goes to the distributor via vacuum readings by a message sent via the electrical connection. One vacuum hose goes to the carb and the other to the distributor. The bracket should bolt to your manifold. I honestly only thought this fitting came on earlier cars like early 70,s but you have taught me otherwise.

There was a bit of customizing on this car. The person I bought the car from was the second owner. He never mentioned anything about modifications. I also noticed that there is two - push buttons located where there is normally one under the hood, near the windshield on the passenger side. Could this be part of a security system? A few weeks ago I pulled into a gas station and filled up. When I tried to start the car, the engine wouldn’t even try to turn over. I thought the battery was low. I tried boosting it for 15 minutes but the motor wouldn’t even try to turn over, so I called a tow truck. After 45 minutes the tow truck arrived and when I walked out of the convenience store to talk to them I thought I would give it one more shot. It started up just like normal and it has been running fine ever since. I think that I may have accidently activated the alarm. I have had problems with the door latches getting stuck in the lock position so I never lock it now, not until I get the locks fixed. That’s when I really started looking at everything closer on the car and noticed the mods. I haven’t had the car very long and I didn’t know what was normal and what was modified.
Thanks again for your response. That helps.

Where do those hoses go that are attached to it? Is it some kind of washer fluid pump? I've never seen anything like that on my '81

It actually looks like the vacuum/electric switch, like the one used on early C3 cars for the wiper door (mounts to the rear of the tachometer housing). If so, you might trace where the electric wiring goes and see what may turn that vacuum switch 'on' & 'off'. That should tell you what that arrangement is meant to do. Basically, a 12 volt signal will cause that vacuum switch to open (or close, depending on its design) and vacuum to be connected (or shut off) between those two vacuum hoses.

I will try and trace out the hoses and wires this weekend so I can get more info on it.
Thanks

I have a 79, and I noticed I have two push buttons near the windshield on the passenger side also. I know one is supposed to be for the alarm, but I have not been able to find out and everyone I've talked to doesn't know what the other one is for. I would like to know what it is for also.

I have had one person suggest that the second button is so that if you put the car in drive with the hood up, it will kill the engine, but I have never thought to try this when I take the car out.

I would say it is the resume solenoid for the cruise control. The bracket should be bolted to the cruise transducer.

I think he's right. I yanked my cruise out last summer and I have that connector with the orange and black wire tied up under the fender.

Well, the 'resume' button (switch) could (re)connect vacuum to the cruise servo. Very possible.

Ok one hose goes to this part and the other one goes under the air filter. Is this part of the cruse control that just is not mounted.
